My taste for horror in music extends beyond rap. When you dig in the tunnels in search of spooky tunes long enough, you tend to find some real interesting flavor that you might not have thought would vibe with you until you hear it.

Horror in music is often typified by a certain 'extreme' sound, such as Death/Black Metal, Goregrind, Horror Punk and Horrorcore, of course. I love all of these genres and my personal playlist pulls from all of them. Lately, however, I've found myself gravitating toward a softer sound when it comes to adopting new music. The overall subjects of these songs remain in the realm of the dark and horrifying, just with a more gentle musical approach. I found most of these by accident. few examples:

Richard Cheese's brilliant lounge covers of Disturbed, Radiohead and Snoop Dogg

Terrance Zdunich of Repo! The Genetic Opera came out with American Murder Song, a concept album of 1800's old timey murder ballads.

Jill Tracy does 'Dark Cabaret', with songs about disembowelment, poisoning and historic instruments of execution with the vibe of a prohibition era speakeasy.

Lonesome Wyatt and The Holy Spooks did an entire album of folkloric ghost stories

Other dark folk artists include Circus Contraption and This Way to Egress, if you like your murder music with fiddles and accordians and shit.

What about you guys? Is there any morbid shit you listen to that favors a gentle bloodletting to a full on clawhammer to the face?

Screamin Jay Hawkins was uptemp for his time but now he'd be considered "easy listening". He has a song called Tangerine Sky about a nuke. It's fuckin haunting and fun at the same time.

I'll recommend looking more into the "dirty" blues too since you're droppin some very credible names (mainly Jill Tracy. Fuck, man, what an underappreciated artist) Josie Miles and Blind Willie McTell are personal favorites but there's keepers abound. When you hear old blues songs about the devil and how he's not that bad of a guy you're hearin the dirty blues. Hip Hop:Horrorcore, Blues:Dirty blues.

Angry Johhny & the Killbillies. They're less horrorpunk and more bluegrass.

Joe Buck Yourself is pretty fuckin out there but maybe you'll dig him too.

*edit* posted the wrong link

I'm definitely adding some that you've listed to shit I need to listen to.

Mack the Knife, holy shit. I forgot about that one. I don't think I've heard it since first grade, that was my granpappy's jam. Good call man.

Awesome contributions, fellas. Keep'em coming. This is exactly what I wanted when I created this thread. You guys are the shit.

@celle2057 You have patrician taste, my good sir.

@sketchez You might like Kardiac. His style is kinda similar. Very industrial beats.

Krunk you a psychobilly fan? Your picks give me that kinda vibe.

I'm having a bitch of a time embedding cuz I'm retarded so I'll  just leave this here.

Love Psychobilly! I met Mojo Nixon & he signed my panties at the radio station where I used to work (then dedicated this song to me at his show... smile)

There are a few bands that do different takes on "spooky" surf rock music. You may or may not dig this at all, but maybe worth checking out to see if you can dig it from time to time. For all of these bands, they have tons of cool songs. So just picking one each is tough. If you even remotely dig what I've posted by these bands I'd suggest diving deeper and sampling some more.

This is "Smoke" by The Coffin Daggers.

The Ghastly Ones - Halloween (She Get So Mean) This one features Rob Zombie. He signed them to his label.

This is The Messer Chups - Dead Down Comedy. This band has a ton of crazy shit. It's basically weirdo German surf rock with insane electronic parts at times. They are especially hard to just find one song to post since they do a bunch of crazy shit. It doesn't hurt that their bass player is super hot

I've always been pretty partial to Voltaire.

Anyone remember that one episode of the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy in which Billy finds a meteor that promises him friendship in exchange for the brains of all of the town's people?

Sweet. This thread is back.

(Video removed for shitting up my own thread with shit I already posted)

I made the mistake of blind buying Caravan of Thieves' album on digital while drunk as shit thinking they were on that ghoulish folk shit, but its mostly vanilla save for one or two tracks. Now in the car I'll have Necro and MMMFD going and the next thing I know its whimsical fiddles and shit. This is one of their few morbid jams, and its still up tempo.

This is the only track I know by This Way to Egress. I've been meaning to explore them further, but I really gotta be in the mood to fuck with these types of songs. I dunno if the rest of their songs are like this one, but its the story of a sociopathic dickhead going on a manic rampage. I guess its Polka? All I know is this ninja shreds on an accordian.

Lonesome Wyatt and The Holy Spooks were probably my first foray into this genre. I found him through...I wanna say Rue Morgue magazine. He came out with "Halloween is Here", a kitchy novelty album of Halloween-themed songs broken up by spoken word spooky stories. Probably the only non-horrorcore thing I listen to during the month of October. This is from his other album, "Ghost Ballads", which is an album of acoustic songs about ghosts adapted from folklore. He's also in a band called "Those Poor Bastards" which is...black country, or dark country, or evil country or some such genre. I tried getting into them but it just sounded like noise to me.
