that could probably work, as well.

although, from an audio standpoint, i have no idea what the quality limitations of youtube are.

Hell, if I had money I'd say we should start our own website with a forum and stuff dedicated to amateur producers.

I was listening to Watch The Throne from Kanye and Jay-Z and noticed that the mixing on that album was less than what you'd expect from somebody that big and rich. There were at least two songs where the had samples that had conflicting frequencies that caused distortions.(Primetime is the only one I can think of right now)  I guess it could be argued that it was possibly just the samples he used, but the way the distorts sounded just seems like the mixer on the album didn't compress or equalize it right. It wasn't too bad, but still surprising.

Not only that, there was one song where they like, put too much sub bass or something on the basses (I think it was Lift Off) and another song where they put the sampled vocals in the background up too loud so you could barely hear the verses they rapped on it. (New Day)

The master was superb on it though, the master was so good that the mixing problems were barely even a problem. It's just weird that a perfectionist (at least as a producer) such as Kanye let something like that slide. Especially considering the fact that this dude does hire well known full orchestras to perform on his instrumentals.

I don't know, I'd like to hear somebody else give their input on this.

myself, id rather have a good mix with a bad master, than the reverse.

you can always just turn the volume up.  unless your system sucks.

im not gonna cop this album just to hear the examples, but ive heard plenty of shit over the years with the same flaws.

regarding the first paragraph, thats similar to the headroom problem.  to counter that, what i do with samples is eq them as closely as i can within specific ranges, ranges that dont overlap so much.  takes about three minutes.  i often do that with instruments as well.

why anyone would strive to get full dynamic range from a sample is beyond me.  its sampling, for fucks sake, youre stealing it to begin with.  making the sample extra crisp and clear is just highlighting the fact that you didnt bother to come up with anything of your own.  plus, it tends to make any additions, especially vocals, sound washed out by comparison.

on the whole, id rather have a basement sound anyway, when it comes to looping other peoples work.  old school style.

oh, and, too much sub bass is an error that is way too prevalent in hiphop today.  for my taste, that is.

okay.

so, ive managed to put together a soundcloud account and all that.

i did a quick mastering test of an old unmastered track to show as an example of some benefits and problems with using maximus for post.

first the mixdown, no compression or anything, not even normalized.

right.  next, a five-minute mastering session with the same song.  this was done with maximus, and an added limiter on the master tracks, nothing else.  no dehiss, noise reduction, not much attention paid to the band settings.  i also pushed up the mid gain slightly too far to show how the compressor compensates, but affects the eq by itself.

notice what compression does to the fadeout at the end.  fadeouts should always be done last.

you can see the difference though.  fl has enough goods to approach a real, professional product.

on a grander scale, what should we oughta do about this studio/producers discussion panel thing?

just start a thread with an obvious title and put it all in there?

or, for that matter, use this thread?

I'd say make a new thread, so it's more obvious to new comers because me and you seem to be the only ones using this. Should put a description in the thread too, so people know what it's about.

by description, im assuming you mean some sort of 'to the point' introduction.

it occurs to me, that i dont even know what subforum to put it in.  technology central doesnt seem right, but neither does anything else.  it can be moved later, so it doesnt matter, i guess.

you wanna start it, or should i?

You should, you have a better idea on what it's supposed to be, I mean, it is your idea in fact.

^^^ Fuck off (even though I'm glad you bumped this thread lollollolbumpbumpbump)

Now that that is out of the way

That's funny... I just today got my first app on my phone to see if I even can make beats that don't sound like Mindless Self Indulgence having a stroke.... this thread will probably help me out if I decide to continue this path... thanks guys!

The phone app is very limited on what you can do but I guess it's a good start to learning the basics of it.

Best advice is to collect as many drum kits, direct wave packs, sound fonts and synths that you can find to give you more options though the default options are already fairly large. The difference between what makes you sound like a generic FL beat and something much more professional is not in the synths you use but in the mixing and mastering and how you use them. Though, if you put an extremely recognizable sound like the 'it was a nightmare' stock vocals in it it's a bad look.

Yeah.... all I know how to do so far is basically playing with layers and looping. No clue as of yet even how to get FL or any kind of packs/kits/etc, much less mix/master.... but its a start lol
