Hardin County prepares for the Juggalo Gathering

It’s officially 2 weeks until I start making my trek towards the Gathering, and Juggalos/Juggalettes aren’t the only ones who are preparing for the festival. Hardin County, where Hog Rock resides, is readying itself for the 6th straight year as being home to the Gathering of the Juggalos.  There’s a new article at TheSouthern.com that talks about problems in the past few years with Juggalos, their budget, and what they’ve learned to prepare for this year.

Hardin County Sheriff Joyce Cullison said her department has been preparing for the event for months. Illinois State Police will again lend a hand.

Cullison said two of her biggest concerns are traffic control and the heat.

“We’re trying to prepare the best we can,” Cullison said. “Just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.”

If you are planning on attending this year, don’t be dicks to the locals.  Yes, the cops will probably be assholes if you are pulled over…but most of the local residents couldn’t be nicer.  The ones that actually do show their face in public tend embrace us and the excitement we bring.   See you ninjas in a few weeks!

I understand its expensive to have all the extra, unnecessary law enforcement scattered throughout the town, and that it costs to ship incarcerated people to other jails in the area, etc, but how much did “several months of planning” to have two police cars parked at the end of a dirt road protecting a news crew cost them? Aside from their own precautionary decisions, how do we cost Hardin County money? When an additional 10,000 – 20,000 ppl enter your town it should boost the local economy, and seeing how many of these people buy up the products provided by local convenience stores, gas stations, Wal-Mart, etc, I see that helping the locals, not costing them more. Same concept as tourists coming to an area for vacation and spending their money there. Maybe there’s something I’m not seeing, but it seems to me like they’re just trying to bitch in hopes of financial backing, and with the FBI label attached to us now I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some new types of “law enforcement” creeping around this year.

And yeah, even the local police there have never been anything but polite and peaceful to me (which is shocking coming from NJ lol) so I can’t say anything bad about them, however we’ll see if the “help” they’re getting from the state police and so on will be able to behave properly, because god only knows how bad it could get if even ONE of those cops tries turning around saying he was attacked or something ridiculous, and then it goes from the 2012 GOTJ to a gang rally they wanna raid or some dumb shit.
