Night Shield (Updated 2012)

Night Shield
Night Shield - "Twerk" Night Shield - "The Way We Do"

Juggalos! Juggalettes! Once again, lend me your ears! Juggalettes, show me your breasts! I mean, wait, oh yeah. Back to this. Juggalos, I caught up with Maniac the Sioxpernatch with the last one, so you all know I had to catch up with the big man at N.S.E. This is, I’ve brushed up and been able to enjoy Night Shield’s music, and I would hope you all would catch up with him as well.

Well ninjas, I’ve been known to handle my alcohol extremely well, and have been known to be drinking with Savs whether it be on the town or up on The Scrubb‘s reservation; and the one thing I’m usually missing at the party is some good fucking drunk music. For drunken hip hop, you can’t get much better than Night Shield.

Coming out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Night Shield literally helped build the South Dakota hip hop and rap scene with his close friend V the Noble. Night Shield has been able to host a wide variety of shows for the underground and also had some show with people some may consider mainstream, underground, meh, it’s your label. I have also gotten to check Shizzle perform live at the SicFux shows I attend, and I have partied up with Night Shield and Maniac a couple times.

Night Shield has some good and real tracks. I myself have become fond of hip hop in this day and age, so it’s nice to see good real hip hop artists out there. So juggalos, sit back and enjoy this legend in the making. Enjoy…

BeZerk: Alright Shizzle, to start this updated interview off, I’d like to ask a few of the same questions I asked in the beginning of our last interview just to catch up the juggalos who missed the last one. Why did you choose to use the name Night Shield?

Night Shield: I’m a Lakota Sioux from the Rosebud Rezervation, here in South Dakota, and my real last night is Night Shield. I always try to keep things as real as possible; so I figured using my real name was as real as it gets!

BeZerk: In an interview with Tobais Grant that I have on my cellphone, you mentioned that you thought that Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony were one of you inspirations. Who else would you consider as an inspiration?

Night Shield: As far as music goes Bone Thugs were definitely my favorite group and an inspiration to me growing up, Krayzie Bone in particular. I’ll also credit Haystak, Cool Nutz, E-40 & Lil Wyte as some of the artists who I look up to and inspire me to be a better artist.

BeZerk: What is your favorite Faygo flavor?

Night Shield: Any flavor mixed with Vodka!

BeZerk: You are pretty much instrumental in most of the music being pushed out of South Dakota. What is it like to be one of the top dogs for your state?

Night Shield: It feels good, I think I’ve reached a point in my career where I can look back and be like; I had a hand in starting this scene. Kinda like the way Scarface or Ice Cube can look at how they were instrumental in getting their respective regions started and recognized. My record label, N.S.E. put out our 1st album, “The Nation Compilation”, in 2001. In 2001 wasn’t nobody doing shit in South Dakota, you had The NobleMen, who V The Noble One came from, and Slamhound as about the only other serious Hip Hop acts that were active at that time. Since then we’ve just grown, there really isn’t much that goes down in this state that myself or V The Noble One doesn’t have a hand in. V The Noble One, who runs Flame-On Entertainment, and I have also brought Maniac: The Siouxpernatural & Trey Lane to the forefront of the scene and now they are each stars and have successful careers in their own right.

BeZerk: You also have your own independent label. Who is signed onto the current roster right now?

Night Shield: Night Shield Entertainment is my label and currently that consists of Maniac: The Siouxpernatural, Danny Boy and DJ Severe.

BeZerk: You’ve dropped an ass ton of albums, and most recently you droppped The Hangover. How did that go, and what would you like to tell the juggalos about that album? I know you had a sweet afterparty afterwards.

Night Shield: As a solo artist I’ve released 5 solo albums, Kataztrophik, Savage Display: The Total Package, Loved & Hated, Sex, Drunks & Hip Hop & Sex, Drunks & Hip Hop II: The Hangover. The Hangover is my best album to date, it tells the tale of the wild lifestyle that envelopes my life and is full of party tracks, but also has a few deep tracks on it. Basically it’s the story of my life since my previous album, Sex, Drunks & Hip Hop, was released. I view each one of my albums as a chapter of my life and when I listen to it it takes me back to that particular time in my life. And you ain’t really partied until you been to an N.S.E. party that’s for damn sure!!

BeZerk: Speaking of hangovers, what’s your favorite drink?

Night Shield: Well as far as beer goes, my main choice of poison is Boulevard with a lemon, but I’m also a fan of Angry Orchard, Corona & Bud Light as well. If I’m doing shots, which I have a tendency to do, I’m rolling with Goldschlagger with Rumplemints as my 2nd in command. My kryptonite is Vodka though, if you want to see a beligerant, shit talking, puking and outta control Night Shield, feed me vodka…

BeZerk: Last time we partied up at SicChix Beverly’s place, you brought Goldenschlagger of all things. Why the Goldenschlagger?

Night Shield: Goldschlagger is that gasoline son!! Can’t get enough of that sweet, sweet elixer. That party was crazy as fuck, got slapped up and cussed up from this chick but still pulled her back to the tele, Sav Life!

BeZerk: For the juggalos that aren’t aware, you are also a Native Grammy Award winner. Why don’t you fill the juggalos in about how that came about?

Night Shield: I’ve won 2 Native American Music Awards, which is basically the Native equivalent to the Grammy’s. I won my 1st one for my album, “Savage Display: The Total Package” and my 2nd one is for my song “Broken Dreams” from my album, “Loved & Hated”. I was the 1st Hip Hop artist to ever get nominated in the Single Of The Year category; so it felt good winning that one and shitting all over the country, rock and blues artists that were in the running as well.

BeZerk: Now that The Hangover has dropped, what’s next for you? Any more CDs, mixtapes, merch, music videos, etc in the works?

Night Shield: Currently right now I’m working on a group album with Maniac: The Siouxpernatural, Danny Boy, V The Noble One & Trey Lane. The album drops in February and is called “Certified.” After that we’ll be dropping Maniac: The Siouxpernatural’s “Nightmares & Dreamscapes” album and I’m slowly working on my next solo project, “Sex, Drunks & Hip Hop III: The Addiction”.

BeZerk: Who have you been able to work with in the industry, and who would you love to work with in the future?

Night Shield: Well I’ve shows with a ton of my favorite artists, people like Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Tech N9ne, Bone Thugs N Harmony, E-40, Twista, Wu Tang Clan, Lil Jon, Ying Yang Twins, Kottonmouth Kingz, Young Buck, Trina, Flo Rida, MGK, the list goes on but you get the point, if someone major’s coming thru to South Dakota I’m usually on the bill as well.

Bezerk:I know you’re doing shows quite often. When and where are the next few shows you’re preforming? (Please include show, date, venue, city, time, ticket price, and where to get tickets if known)

Night Shield: Next show I got on deck is 9th Annual Player’z Ball in Mission, SD on November 23rd and then I’m at The Wicked Winter’s Ball 3 in St. Paul, MN on DOOMSDAY, December, 21st. After that I’m trying to stay off the circuit until this “Certified” album drops in February.
