July 11th was my birthday, and as part of my yearly festivities, I decided to make a run up to Louisville for the evening to see Strange Music’s Summer of Strange tour stop. I really like Krizz Kaliko and Mayday, but I LOVE me some Stevie Stone, so I was very excited to see all three on the same bill! When I arrived at the venue, it was certainly not what I was expecting. I saw in advance that this was a bowling alley slash music venue, so I was picturing that you would walk through the bowling area to get to the venue. But really, the venue entrance was on the back of the building, down a couple of stairs into the basement. Aside from the occasional bowling noises above you, you really would never know that it was a bowling alley. Well actually, there was also a ball return that ran directly over the top of the stage, so you would see bowling balls whizz by in it about every minute or so! haha

Three friends from Nashville also came up for this show, so it was great to be able to spend my birthday with friends, since that’s a rare thing in my life! After grabbing some (VERY strong…thank you, bartender!) drinks, the first act went on.

He was a local rapper named Bazerk, and we were all taken back by how good he was! After maybe his second song, we all kind of looked at each other and said “It is just me, or is this guy really good??” He had some very interesting beats, a quick flow, and some very intense and intelligent lyrics. Once his set was over, we all went to talk to him and let him know how much we were feeling his set. I certainly hope we see more of Bazerk in the future because all four of us thought his set was awesome.
After Bazerk, BGood took the stage for his set. We had all retreated a bit, and honestly I didn’t watch his set as intently as I should have. What I did watch was very good, but by this point, we were all concentrating on our drinks a little more than on the performances! haha There was also one more opener after BGood, whose name I never caught. But they were good as well, and the whole crowd packed in toward the stage and came alive for their set.

When it was time for Stevie Stone, I ran up to the stage, and was one person back from the stage for his performance. I really love the way Stevie moves around the stage, and his manerisms and stage presence are very unique. My favorite song of his his 808 Bendin’, which was one of the first he sang. One of my friends had never listened to his music before, but she ended up being impressed with his performance as well! He sang Momentum, along with Get Buck, My Remedy and lots of his other best songs. I was very glad that the crowd gave him such a warm reception, since he’s one of my favs.

When Stevie left the stage, it was time for Mayday, who happens to be a favorite of one of my friends at the show. Mayday is great, and maybe one thing I enjoy about them so much is that they are a full band, so there are lots of people to watch on stage. Most of the time in underground music, you are only watching one or two performers, so Mayday brings a different dynamic to their sets in that regard. Bernz and Wreckonize are really great at playing off of each other and commanding the stage equally. I know they sang Badlands, Hardcore Bitches and Worst Case Scenario, but honestly I was so into the performance that I barely remember anything else they sang. We were all having a blast…exactly what should happen on your birthday :-)

With Mayday done, the only person left was Krizz Kaliko. This was my first time seeing Krizz Kaliko headline, since every other time I’ve seen him, he’s been with Tech N9ne. He’s a really talented guy, so it was fun to see him take the spotlight for a while and really do his thing! One thing I thought was odd was that he did quite a few songs that were actually just small snips of songs instead of a song that the crowd could get into. For example, Areola came on, and everyone went crazy, but like 10 seconds later, it was over. Boo. But we did get a very long set out of him, and got to hear songs like Dixie Cup, Unstable, Kill Shit and Abu Dhabi. Once he was done, he said that he would be back at the merch booth to meet people, so the crowd basically all did an about face, and headed back to the merch booth.

After a few minutes, Kali, Stevie, Bernz and Wreckonize all came out into the crowd to greet people. Kali had a HUGE line of people wanting to meet him and get an autograph, so I opted to greet the other three and see if his line would die down. Stevie actually remembered me from his show last November in Nashville, which was cool. Also got to meet Bernz and Wreckonize for the first time, which was cool. They both confirmed that they were going to be on main stage for the Gathering, which is great and exactly where they deserve to be, in my opinion. Once I was done, I headed back to the merch booth and treated myself to a red Snake and Bat symbol necklace for my birthday. It’s cute…just the right size to wear on the same chain as my blue Hatchetman, and they look pretty together :-)

With Kali’s line still being enormous, and me being exhausted from a long day of birthday celebrations, I decided to head out and make my way back to my hotel. What a lovely treat to be able to just crash at a hotel after an out-of-town show! Much nicer than a three hour drive back home in the middle of the night!

This was a great show, and I had a BLAST! The crowd was very fun but very respectful, and everyone was just there to have a good time. All three main performances were fantastic, and even the three openers were all well above average for their performances. The venue was really unique, sounded really good, and had a generous bartender! I wish every show I went to was this fun!
