After over a decade of performing and recording as a member of the Kottonmouth Kings, notorious MC Johnny Richter has gone solo!  Richter is ready to give fans their first taste of his new solo material with the release of ‘FreeKING Out’, which drops on December 17, 2013 via Suburban Noize Records. Richter celebrated the release of the album by hitting the road for his first headlining tour throughout December with support from California hip-hop head Sozay.

“Over the past two years, there was a lot of drama in my life and I wasn’t happy with where I was. I started to look at things and the reason I wasn’t happy is because I wasn’t making music or playing shows. I needed to get back to basics by cutting out the all of the negativity, so I could focus on creating music again,” said Richter. “The music and the fans have always been the most important thing to me; I don’t give a shit about all the drama or getting involved in internet wars. I just want to make some banging music for the fans and get back to rocking shows around the globe.”

After breaking away from his former cohorts, Richter set up shop at DJ MUGGS’ legendary MGS Sound Lab Studios in Burbank, CA to record some smoking new solo joints. Under the watchful eye of the Soul Assassins producer and engineer G-ROCKA, Richter unloaded some truly ferocious rhymes when unleashed in the studio. Drawing from a palette of good, bad, and ugly personal experiences, Richter is in full attack mode on the “FreeKING Out” EP.

Now Richter is back and firmly focused on his solo career with the release of his new EP and upcoming headlining tour. Without anyone holding him back, Richter is completely loaded up with deadly rhymes that will ensure fans are “FreeKING Out”.

Track by track review and rating

  1. FreeKING Out- This track starts off with a hard hitting beat with a very complex musical backing.  Richter puts together some very pointed and very well performed verses.  This track is a good start to this EP and lets the listener know exactly why he made the album.  A solid hook rounds out this track.  8/10
  2. Richter’s Back- Another really complex mix of beat and music in this one.  The verses are nice and he flows really well.  The hook is simple but effective.  The track is definitely a prime example of his mic skills and ability to put out solid solo material.  7/10
  3. Let Me Win (feat. Mina Fedora)- A much slower and simpler beat drives this track.  Mina Fedora adds a nice twist and change of pace on the hook.  The verses are smooth, well written, and nicely produced on this track.  8/10
  4. Won’t Break- The beat in this track has a much different feel for Richter.  It is a nice southern trap beat that allows the lyrics of the verses to come through and have a nice impact.  The hook is simple and work well here.  7/10
  5. Talk About It (feat. Mina Fedora)- Another complex beat here.  Richter flow is so smooth on the verses and the lyrics are once again pointed and intended to explain why he left the kings.  He speaks of drug use, being abandoned, and many other issues that lead to him leaving his long time group.  Mina Fedora adds a nice hook again.  A very good track to end the EP.  8/10

Conclusion:  Richter went into the studio and recorded this entire EP in just one day and it shows in the execution.  The album is not perfect but a nice exit piece for him.  It allows his side of things to be heard and also let him get it off his chest.  While this album is not the best solo project we have seen from Richter it is a definite for any long time fan or his or the Kings.  This album is recommended.
