Hack Naja, started writing in 2008 and first hit the studio and shows in ’09 before getting locked up until 2011. He is one half of the group, The Super Smash Bros.  Already showing great potential two years ago he is now stepping back into music and brings us his first solo effort, Rap Bastard.  Will the album rise up to the bar set by their first group release?

Track by track review and rating

  1. Intro- A long intro to lead off the album.  A lot of spoken word over a simple beat.  The intro ends with a little live recording introducing the album.  Not much to rate on the intro.  N/A
  2. Rap Bastard- The beat in this track is very mellow.  A slow beat with a little guitar hit in it.  The first verse starts a little slow but finishes strong.  The hook is good and fits the theme for the track.  The mellow beat allows Hack’s verbal skills to stand in the forefront.  7/10
  3. Project Cloverleaf Ft Draztik & Jahred of Hed PE- The intro to the track introduces the conspiracy theory behind Chemtrails.  The beat is slower with a frantic piano here.  The verses are well written and performed in this one.  The featured artists add some good change of pace and flair to the track.  8/10
  4. WCR- A darker beat drives the track.  The verses follow suit and continue the dark theme here.  A simple hook fills the space between verses but it falls short in comparison to the fast paced verses and lyrical abilities displayed.  8/10
  5. Hey Officer Ft Ronnie Blaze- Another complex beat in this one but in this case it is distracting.  The verses focus on feelings of distain towards police and the hook does the same thing.  The track is performed well and Ronnie Blaze adds a nice verse but it falls short overall.  6/10
  6. This Is How We Roll Ft Hard Jawz- This track has a hard hitting beat that really works well with the quick verses.  Hard Jawz adds some nice flavor here.  8/10
  7. Shut Shit Down Ft Hard Jawz & ARay- A new Super Smash Bros track!  A really solid old school beat backs old school verses.  For old school fans this track will hit all the cylinders.  For more modern fans it will be a 50/50 split.  7/10
  8. The Path Ft ARay & J BizR- Slow melodic piano backs a slow beat.  This track is the standard “this is my story track.”  The verses and hook work well together and give the listener a look into the history behind Hack Naja.  7/10
  9. Misunderstood Ft Dark Half- Another slow beat backed by piano here.  The dark and somewhat depressing tone is heard throughout the track.  A nice track despite the downer of a theme.  7/10
  10. My Demons- A synth piano backs the beat in this track.  The verses are well performed again and the hook is good.  8/10
  11. The Great Debate Ft J Dirty- The beat has a lot of sound effects and other things going on here.  The debate of alcohol vs weed is explored here.  J Dirty and Hack put solid verses together here.  7/10
  12. Blowing Smoke Ft Potluck & De Jangles- A really solid but simple beat guides this track.  Hack shows he can hold his own with Potluck and puts in a solid first verse.  Potluck rarely disappoints and this track is no exception.  De Jangles finishes the track very nicely.  9/10
  13. Carry Me On- The beat has a very good acoustic guitar backing similar to simple man by Bukshot.  A mellow track that sums up the album nicely.  9/10
  14. Rap Bastard (Chopped & Screwed)- A remix of the albums second track here.  As happens with most chopped and screwed tracks this one falls short of the original.  The album would have been better served having thirteen tracks and ending with Carry Me On.  5/10

Conclusion:  Most fans will know Hack Naja from his work with the Super Smash Bros and that will attract fans to this release.  Don’t be fooled into thinking this is anything like that album though.  Hack puts together a solid solo debut release.  This album is recommended for fans solid hip hop, great verses, and solid production value.
