Demrick, formerly known as Young De, started his career in 2005 when he met Kurupt in Philadelphia. At the time he was in a group called Tangled Thoughts and Kurupt urged them to move to California. They took him up on the suggestion and released an album with Kurupt titled as Philly 2 Cali in 2007.

In 2008, Demrick released his solo debut mixtape titled Audio Hustlaz, Vol. 1, which was presented by DJ Skee. B-Real contributed to the mixtape as a producer and featured on several tracks. Later that year, Demrick released the Homeland Security mixtape, which was a collaboration project with Shady/Interscope’s artist Cashis. Homeland Security was hosted by DJ Whoo Kid and featured tracks with Royce Da 5’9, Crooked I and Freeway among others.

Demrick was also featured on B-Real’s first solo debut album, Smoke N Mirrors (2009), making appearances on 5 of the 15 songs, including the single “Don’t Ya Dare Laugh”. With that album, B-Real and Demrick spent a lot of time touring overseas. In the middle of 09’, Demrick’s appearance on DJ Muggs’ Soul Assassins: Intermission album, which landed 2,000,000 hits on YouTube for its first single “Figure It Out”. Due to the success of that song he has spent the past 2 years touring with Xzibit.

In 2010 Cypress Hill released their 8th studio album titled “Rise Up” on EMI’s Priority Records. Demrick was featured on the street single “It Ain’t Nothin”. The video for this single received rotation on all television outlets and landed him on Last Call with Carson Daly. He also went on tour with Cypress, performing at festivals like Rock Am Ring and Rockin Rio. At the end of the year Demrick teamed up with DJ Fingaz, for yet another mixtape titled as De Is for Demrick.

2011-present: Urban Ammo, Neva Look Back, and #Heads Up

In 2011, Xzibit and Demrick created a music catalog for the company Extreme Music/Sony ATV titled as Urban Ammo. From that catalog, they chose two digital singles, including “Man on the Moon” and “What It Is”. These videos were shot by director Matt Alonzo and led to rotation on MTV. In mid-2011, Demrick released an EP titled Neva Look Back, which was produced solely by Scoop DeVille. The EP had three singles “What’s Good”, “Ready 2 Go” and “What’s Good (Remix)”.

Now B-Real, Xzibit and Demrick team up and bring us the first Volume of their Serial Killers Mixtape series.

Track by track review and rating

  1. First 48- A nice smooth West Coast beat leads off this track.  Xzibit takes the first verse which sets the stage and lets the listener know this isn’t like any other mixtape on the market.  Demrick takes the second verse and keeps the old school flow going.  B-Real finishes the track off nicely.  No real hook on the track but a good start to the album.  8/10
  2. Wanted- The beat in this track is much more complex and takes away the lyrics in the B-Real’s first verse.  The hook is simple in its construction.  Demrick adds a nice second verse.  Xzibit finishes the track off with a decent verse.  7/10
  3. Dickies and Bandanas Ft Kurupt- A very smooth simple beat in this track.  Demrick takes the lead and does well.  Kurupt adds a very good verse.  Xzibit and B-Real split the last verse but it works here.  8/10
  4. In The Sky- The music and beat behind this track is very reminiscent of a Doors track from the 60’s.  A nice shift from the earlier tracks.  The verses are all well done and the hook rounds the track out here.  7/10
  5. Doctor’s In Ft Hopsin- This track has a much slower and darker music backing it.  We see Hopsin give us a dark verse here, it works well with the overall tone of the track.  Xzibit is not on this track but Hopsin fills that gap well.  8/10
  6. Whatever Cuz Ft Goldie Locc- Back to a more gangster sound with this one.  Xzibit leads off and hits hard with his style and flow.  Goldie gives us a solid verse that continues the hardcore style.  B-Real finishes the track off with a solid verse.  The verse is simple and fits well with the rest of the track.  9/10
  7. Legends Never Die Ft Easy MoneyST- This track is a drastic change from the last with a somewhat melodic hook and lead in.  Xzibit kills his verse with a hard hitting flow while B-Real tones it down for his verse.  Then Xzibit brings back the hard hitting style to conclude the track.  Too bad the hook was not different.  6/10
  8. Worst Nightmare- The beat in this track is very nicely done.  It allows the lyrics in the verses to come through and have the intended impact.  The hook is solid and fits well in this track.  8/10
  9. Get 2 It- The beat here is once again very busy and distracting.  The verses are solid and well done, although they are slightly drown out by the beat.  The hook is well written and works.  7/10
  10. Six Billion Ways- A real good old school feel to this track.  The beat is slow and slightly complex.  The hook fits with the tone set by the beat.  Well written verses make this a good track as a whole.  7/10
  11. No Comin’ Back- This track is straight Hip Hop from the beat to hook and rounded out by the verses.  A very solid track that will have the listener bobbing their head.  8/10
  12. Laugh Now Ft John Connor- This is a track that suffers from another complex beat.  It is simple in construction but too many background sounds going on here.  Xzibit gives us a really good verse that cuts through the beat nicely.  Overall a good track.  7/10
  13. Eaten Alive- This track is a straight banger.  The verses are hard and push the theme of being an animal.  The hook is constructed very strong.  This is definitely the best track on the album.  10/10
  14. Angels Come Calling- A much mellower track ends this album.  The hook is reminiscent of that 90’s flow that brought these guys into everyone’s living room.  Good verses by all the guys are involved in making this a good ending to this Mixtape.  8/10

 Overall Album Rating:  7.7/10

Conclusion:  Even though some people will not know much of Demrick’s career, he holds his own in this album.  B-Real adds his unique style to all of the tracks.  Xzibit comes hard with almost all of his verses.  The combination of all three styles works very nicely in this album.  With the cost of the album being $0.00 any fan of any of the guys should pick it up.  The major influence seems to be from the background of Xzibit and B-Real and will not leave fans disappointed.  Definitely recommended for fans of old school gangster rap and hip hop.
