Just a few days ago, I found out that the Dallas Twiztid Street Team was hosting a scavenger hunt for #FamAppreciationMonth!  It’s been a long time (from what I remember) since any underground group did something like this, and even longer since I’ve partaken in it.  I didn’t have any plans to speak of on Saturday afternoon, so I thought “why not?” and gave it a shot.

For those who don’t know the details about the scavenger hunt, the local Twiztid street teams are given a bunch of flyers, stickers, posters, etc promoting the upcoming Twiztid show.  Most importantly, there is a “golden ticket” there that gives the lucky winner 2 tickets to that show, and a chance to win a VIP Pass as well!  So it was definitely worth the excursion to try to find them…plus it’d be a hell of a lot of fun!

After coordinating with my homies Marty and Jason, we decided to meet up in downtown Dallas (Deep Ellum specifically) and wait for the first clue.

The first clue was supposed to be announced via @TwiztidShop at 3:30 PM.  I had my wife and 3 year old son with me, and figured I’d be doing the driving while she looked at the clues and kept Pierce (my son) entertained. We got to Dallas at about 3:45 and were about to park and just wait for clues to start popping up.  Marty and Jason were still on their way, and BAM!  Clue #1 hit the Twitter feed:

Clue #1

I have lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for all of my life, and I truly suck at knowing where things in Dallas are…especially downtown.  Since our homies hadn’t made it to the area yet, we told them to check the clue and let us know where they thought we should start.  Marty immediately called back and said “That’s Dallas Alley”.  We put that into our GPS, passed it, and then had to find a parking spot.  Parking in downtown Dallas SUCKS!  We found somewhere that wasn’t a complete ripoff ($5.00 for the weekend) and started walking that way.  We were nearly there when Marty called us sounding like a kid on Xmas saying that he had found the first golden ticket!

That ticket also had a copy of The Darkness left with it!  Bonus flavor!  Since Marty found the ticket, his two tickets were going to go towards he and his wife.  Jason was now on the hunt for the next set of tickets.  Onto the next clue!

Clue #2

We made our way over to the building and started looking around.  One of the other pictures was of a water main pipe.  The door to the building was locked, but it was a parking garage, so we just ran up to the second floor.  We didn’t immediately know where the elevator was, so we saw the flight of stairs and we took them!  Remember, we had a toddler with us. He was on my shoulders and I had to keep ducking under the low overpasses for 6 floors.  Amanda, Pierce, Jason, and I made it to the top.  Marty’s a big ninja, and was pouring sweat when he got to the top, but he made it!

Remember, this was only the second clue, and we found the first one so quickly that we had no idea if anyone else was even taking part in the hunt.  We went and looked at every water pipe on the roof of the parking garage, and found a single sticker left there by the ninjas who snagged it.  We officially have competitors!

The heat was on now! We were beaten by another crew of ninjas, and we wanted to make sure everyone in our crew got their golden ticket!  Marty and Jason actually had to leave for a wedding that afternoon, but said that they’d wait around for one more clue until they had to bounce.

That clue came minutes later:

Score!  We knew EXACTLY where that was!  We all piled into Jason’s car and headed in the right direction.  The train painting was the giveaway, not to mention the street sign (which was barely readable on the phone).  Either way, we hauled ass over there.  As soon as we saw the train painting, we parked illegally and all hopped out like scavengers to look EVERYWHERE around that place.  All that was left were a few Twiztid flyers.  We got beat…AGAIN!  FUCK!

Congrats to the winners though!

Marty and Jason had to leave, and Jason was a little upset that he wasn’t able to snag a ticket.  We told him that we’d stay for the last two clues to try to win one for him!  I’m not gonna use the tickets for myself (don’t worry, I’ll be there!), so why not hook a homie up!

At this point, all of the clues had been in downtown Dallas.  We stuck around until we got the next clue:

Clue #4

Clue #4

This was in Deep Ellum (obviously), though I didn’t know where the actual spot was until we saw the Crowdus street sign.  Now, here’s the issue.  From downtown Dallas to Deep Ellum is roughly a mile away…maybe a bit longer.  No problem, but it was now a race to get to that intersection, and the other hunters had been snagging these tickets with the quickness!  It was probably around 5 PM, and the roads were getting more crowded.  Stop lights in downtown Dallas are a bitch too.  I was stuck in traffic, and didn’t know how long it would be for.  We were staring at tail lights for a few minutes when we started toying with the idea of Amanda (my wife) just getting out and running to the next spot while I drove.  I didn’t know how much longer we’d be in traffic, so she hopped out and started jogging to the next destination.  As luck would have it, I passed her up about 2 blocks later.  She had already crossed the street and waved me on, so I just made my way to where we hoped we’d find the ticket.

I got to Crowdus, and turned down it. I was also checking my phone at the same time to see if anyone had won.  There was NOWHERE to park and get out to look, so I went back to the 7-11 that’s in Deep Ellum to wait for Amanda to reach me.  She was a trooper!  She ran over a mile, dodged cars, got flipped off, and narrowly avoided injury to get these tickets…that we aren’t even going to use for ourselves. lol.  That’s some fuckin’ dedication!

Because of the delays, we definitely missed out on the 4th ticket.  Congrats to the winners of this one:

The wifey made it back to us shortly before the the 5th and final clue had been announced.  I still had my son with me, and if you look away from your car for more than 5 seconds, a Dallas cop will leave a ticket on your windshield.  So with that said, when the the last clue popped up on @TwiztidShop, she was off to the races!  We kind of expected it to be in or around Trees, which is a venue that has hosted a bunch of underground and Juggalo related shows in the past.  Here’s the clue:

BAM! Trees as suspected!  She got there and asked for more help with the clue. For whatever reason her phone was fucking up and she couldn’t get any internet signal, so calling me and having me play “I Spy” over the phone with her would have to do.  I described the dumpster, the tan SUV, and that it looked like it was behind something.  She hung up, seemingly frustrated, and I sat in the car and waited.  A few minutes later, I got a call from Amanda: “I got it!”  We were victorious!  WOOHOO!  She made her way back to the car and showed me the stack of stickers, flyers, posters, and even an OG Mostasteless CD that the Dallas Twiztid Street Team had left for whoever found it!  Oh yeah, and don’t forget that golden ticket!

Now THAT was a fresh way to spend an afternoon in Dallas!  It helped that everyone in our group came away with a ticket, but we had a hell of a great time regardless!  It was kind of a rush to have to race from clue to clue not knowing who else was hot on the trail!

Before I wrap this little review up, I want to give HUGE props to Kim (aka Cameraninja) and James (aka GhostDTX) for heading this whole hunt up.  Seriously, you guys kicked ass, gave great clues, and made the whole process exciting!  I know Ghost came out of pocket for some of the prizes included with finding the tickets (The Darkness and OG Mostasteless), so extra kudos to you for that!  Also, props to Twiztid and the whole Majik Ninja Entertainment team for giving the fam some fresh prizes!

That’ll wrap this review up!  Again, we all had such a fun time doing this that I didn’t want the flavor to go unspoken of.  If you have a scavenger hunt scheduled for your area for this tour, or any tours in the future, it’d be worth your while to take part in it!  Congrats to all the winners, and we’ll see you at Twiztid next month!
