Juggalos Beat Facial Recognition Technology; Elon Musk Confirms that he’s “Down With The Clown”

This story is too dope (pun intended) not to share with you!  There’s a Twitter user named @Tahkion who is a computer science blogger that posted a series of tweets about facial recognition technology.  While a pretty solid way to identify people, there is apparently a flaw in the system.  Tahkion discovered that face paint such as those worn by Juggalos completely throws some forms of facial recognition algorithms all out of wack!  There have actually been several articles and posts about this find, and even Elon Musk commented on it!  We’ve got what I consider the best of the articles, along with Elon Musk’s response below!  Check it out!

From TheOutline.com:

Last September, the world welcomed Juggalos (or Juggalettes, depending on which you prefer) to The Resistance when they marched on Washington en masses to protest the policies of the Trump administration. As if they weren’t already doing the absolute most, the die-hard fans of the rap group Insane Clown Posse have become accidental heroes for people concerned about facial recognition tech: According to Twitter user @tahkion, a computer science blogger for WonderHowTo, Juggalo makeup outmatches the machine learning algorithms that govern facial recognition technology.

In a series of follow-up tweets, @tahkion explained that facial recognition works by pinpointing the areas of contrast on a human face—for instance, where a nose is located, or where the chin becomes the neck. As it happens, juggalo makeup often involves applying black paint below the mouth, but above the chin. That makes facial recognition vulnerable to misidentifying the placement of the jaw.

You might be thinking: “Well, if Juggalos constantly wear this makeup, wouldn’t the facial recognition technology just continually recognize their Juggalo faces?” According to @tahkion, thatdepends onthe Juggalo consistently wearing the same style of makeup. This problem also assumes that Juggalos wear their makeup all the time—which they don’t. The style is reserved for Insane Clown Posse shows and other special occasions, like the March on Washington.

Face-painting styles like “corpse” makeupalso obscure the face. However, they don’t create enough contrast to effectively confuse most facial recognition systems. Dramatic styles of feminine makeup, like heavy eyeliner, also are generally not enough to confuse facial recognition systems, @tahkion claims. However, facial recognition tech such as Apple’s Face ID,which does not rely on visible light and uses depth perception, would not be tricked by juggalo makeup (otherwise it would never work in the dark).

People are constantly trying to come up with ways to work around facial recognition technology using everything fromrigged hats(if you’re out in public) toheavy pixelation(if you’re online). Groupssuch as CVDazzlehave tried to bring art into the effort to defeat facial recognition with art, using dramatic, futuristic styles of makeup—but @tahkion claimed CV Dazzledoesn’t alwaysobscure the face as well as Juggalo makeup.

Facial recognition is already in broad use by law enforcement. This past week, the FBI used facial recognition to identify the man who opened fire on the offices of Maryland newspaperCapital Gazette, killingfive people. But use of facial recognition islargely unregulated. Amazon’s “Rekognition” toolhas been pilotedin the Orlando, FL and Washington County, OR police departments, and the company is looking to expand its use. Private companies like Moscow-based NtechLabhave developed “ethnicity recognition” toolswith the intention for it to be used by law enforcement to, in essence, automate racial profiling. This isn’t just happening in the U.S.: in China, facial recognition is used tomonitor citizen activityas a part of its extensive“social credit” system, which affects people’s ability to get loans and use certain public services, like bike rentals.

On sites like Facebook, facial recognition technology been used for years toidentify people in photos, suggest user tags, and perhapsprevent the unauthorized useof a photo. (If you delete your Facebook account, it remains unclear when or if all user data—including facial recognition tools for a person—is deleted.)

To be very clear,The Outlineis not endorsing the creation of a Juggalo-makeup powered society that strives to avoid the utilization of facial data at all costs, even as we come to terms with theimplicit biasembedded in the technology. But… Juggalos… Welcome (Back) to The Resistance.

Not only is this news fresh and entertaining as fuck, but Elon Fucking Musk of Tesla (among other things) actually confirmed that he liked ICP!  What’s more is that Violent J responded to that tweet!  Check out the whole Twitter thread in this screen shot:

Whether Elon responds or not, I still think it’s pretty fresh that he took the time to show some love for the Wicked Clowns!  Whoop Whoop Mr. Musk!

Elon Musk is a pretty cool dude with some helpful inventions (of course there’s also shit about him to be criticized, but still) and it’s always nice when respect-worthy people fuck with ICP. To me at least. But yeah, that response really fucking sucked. If I were Musk and I’d actually like ICP, I’d be pretty disappointed. Maybe they share 505303’s sentiments about him. Which would be sad but not surprising. ICP definitely have some anti-intellectual qualities mixed in with their ideals.

I assume J meant it as an investment in them, as Elon does but God knows what it would be for, as opposed to a full-on homeless guy asking for pennies in front of a Skyline and J just doesn’t know how to act in that particular arena. Like the March speech, he got his point across but in a very Joe way not some eloquently crafted prose that would ring through the ages.
This isn’t really anything though just an odd blurb brought together by the internet.

The article is extremely misleading and incorrect. “Last September, the world welcomed Juggalos (or Juggalettes, depending on which you prefer) to The Resistance when they marched on Washington en masses to protest the policies of the Trump administration”. The march had NOTHING to do with Trump. It was about an FBI decision to include Juggalos in a gang assessment report back in 2011.

Whatever, people shouldn’t judge violent j or Elon musk. Cuz that is the same shit the FBI did to all of us! U can’t judge a book by it’s cover or base an OPINION on a select few. As far as I’m concerned the Space X dude is a juggalo! To quote 505303

People whining that they asked elon for money is hilarious. Shit if a guy who is on record as having so much money that he doesn’t know what to do with it said he liked my shit I would be all about asking for cash. Either an investment for a dope project, or a payment for a special performance, or a donation to cover the costs of their political endeavor. All of its good.

I don’t like that it’s connected to Trump in the eyes of these “reporters.” Obama was in charge when all of the shit went down, and Obama has nothing to do with it either. They should just mention that it was over something that started in 2011. Trump worked his first day in 2017.

My personal politics aside, it is crap that they lump us in with the anti-Trump deal; there’s ninjas on all side of the spectrum and some that don’t care.
The article i found was from a Santa Fe ‘newspaper’. I live 2,000 miles from NM so i’m not sure if it’s even a real newspaper; but this one is some .com shit, so my rule has always been that you can’t trust internet news and get your news from multiple places. A lot of mine comes from the BBC, because it’s a lot less sensationalized and i like the outside view of our own nonsense. A lot of the time US sources can’t see the forest from the trees, but i don’t throw them all out entirely either.

Not with trump or obama. I think all presidents have the same goal. The media is a master manipulator though, it shows right there at the March how fucked they are. RT is usually my top source.

Elon Musk has always intrigued me and been an inspiration. So many scientists and inventors go way out of hand, corrupted by their own pursuit towards what they CAN do rather than what they should do. And simple yet golden mentions such as this made my day.
The guy is against transhumanism and technological slavery with money going towards helping humanity. That shit brings hope.
Elon Musk is Batman. And Batman is a Juggalo. What up to that ninja Mikey though lol

I like Trump because of all the dope changes he has made, that no one pays attention to… Just saying, as a juggalo, I would not march against the Golden Toad. 🇺🇸
