Convince Me To Like This Band: Insane Clown Posse [Podcast]

Juggalos and Juggalettes: I just finished listening to a podcast that I think you’re gonna love. It’s called the “Convince Me To Like This Band” podcast, and this week’s subjects are your two favorite wicked clowns: The Insane Clown Posse!

The theme of this podcast series is for a fan and a hater to debate each other over the merits of a band.  Faygoluvers’ own Hanka is the special guest Juggalo, and hip-hop producer Derrick Braxton is the “hater”. Check the brief description of this episode below:

In Episode 5, the extreme SUPER JUGGALO, “Hanka,” who has seen Insane Clown Posse perform over 220 times puts his passion on display as he explains the strange allure of the Clowns and attempts to convince Derrick Braxton, the Grammy winning Hip Hop producer and engineer who has worked with Lupe Fiasco and Raekwon, that ICP are misunderstood and under-appreciated artists.

There are a lot of points brought up by Mr. Braxton that I believe most people outside the Juggalo world probably think, and some that threw me off.  He was really stuck on his opinion that ICP pain their faces to hide themselves and skirt the responsibilities of the lyrics that they rap about.

Much respect to Hanka for shining a positive light on Juggalos and ICP!  You can hear the hour-long podcast below:

Honestly this was very frustrating to listen to. There were so many ignorant and blind misconceptions from that Derrick dude. Derrick didn’t make much sense at all with his arguments and the songs chosen were never going to appeal to his tastes.

Honestly, I don’t blame anybody for not liking ICP. They are extremely inconsistent when it comes to quality and there are so many verses that just seem lazy and cringy. BUT hating on the facepaint is the one thing I will never get and won’t let slide. Having a gimmick is so common in so many genres and that includes covering your face. I haven’t listened to this yet but I hope somebody asks the producer whether he discounts MF DOOM for the same reason.

I havent listened to this yet but from what other comments are saying he doesnt sound like he convinces the guy. Ive explained why I liked ICP a few times due to the set of friends I would have. ICP to me is the most creative rap group in history. Are they the best? No. Liked FFF but its the only card in the 2nd deck I own. The first 6 are my shit. I love bumping them. Lately Ringmaster. How dope would a video for Southwest Song be?

Well, he was a little successful. Hanka did a really good job and the dude ended up really liking Hanka and even said he might have to reconsider his stance on ICP and will give them a second listen. But then he still said they had no artistic integrity. Overall it was a fun listen though. I like the idea and they did seem actually interested in each others perspective, which was cool. But the guys arguments were all over the place and really inconsistent, so I get why it was frustrating for Radam, it was a bit frustrating for me as well. I mean at the end the guy literally had a list of other white rappers prepared. I don’t know what the point of that was.

So i appreciate you guys for listening. This interview actually went on for like 3-4 hours! I played some of ICP’s more well produced hits for Derrick but he didn’t budge on his stance of “They can take the paint off and still walk in the streets without worry” I did however change his perspective of they are responsible for the content they put out by basically breaking down how us as juggalos try to police our own, we try to keep this bigot free, and we try to educate new juggalos and old alike if they are just missing the point.

I like to think i was articulate with my explanations, and that i opened his eye’s a little. However at the end of the day he saw it as two guys who rapped about being from the streets who are now two older white guys who take off the facepaint and have not a care in the world. Which couldn’t be further from the truth. It was a hell of a lot of fun to be flown out there, Speck was a gracious host in more than just the studio even inviting me to stay at his home and it was great.

All in all i hope i did juggalos justice and i wish you all could hear the whole 3 or 4 hour debate but to be honest Derrick did ramble a bit…

Maybe we will get a part 2 somewhere down the line.

Thanks again for listening and if you wanna check out some awesome photos of the clowns or follow my journey check out https://www.hankaphotos.com or https://www.twitch.tv/scrub_in_japan
