Besides what we've talked about : Clive Barker, Jeffrey Deaver, John Grisham, Anne Rice's novels about the Mayfaire witches absolutely blew me away (trust me, pick those up sometime), Michael Crichton, and right now I'm reading my first Vince Flynn book and I love it. I'll be reading a lot more by him. Sorry, couldn't resist commenting.

The lord of the rings are among my favorite even though I have only read through them once.

I have always heard of H.P. lovecraft but never had picked up his books. He had a quote that I learned in 9th grade and still sticks with me.."The most merciful in the world, I think, Is the inability of the human mind to correlate all of its contents"

From my understanding he creates these mythical creatures that is beyond all understanding of the world we currently live in. He believed that if we could truly see the world the way things really our minds couldn't handle it.

IDK if you have ever heard of "eternal darkness" for gamecube, but it is very inspired by his works.

I do love the works of edgar poe, but its almost work to translate his metaphors and allegories. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I prefer my language to be semi current.

Anyone ever read "The Lord Of The Flies"? Probably my single favorite book of all time

Read Lord of the Flies after I read Hearts in Atlantis, very good book. They spoiled the end for me in Hearts in Atlantis, but I loved the ending even though I knew what was coming, the whole "who will save the crew" question. Wasn't it something like that? We saved the children but who will save us? Been a long time, can't exactly remember.

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.” - HP LOVECRAFT

Lovecraft's Guiding Aesthetic & Philosophical Principle was what he Termed "Cosmicism" or "Cosmic Horror", the idea that Life is Incomprehensible to Human Minds and that the Universe is Fundamentally Inimical to the Interests of Humankind. As such, his stories express a Profound Indifference to Human Beliefs & Affairs. Lovecraft is best known for his Cthulhu Mythos story cycle & the Necronomicon, a fictional magical textbook of rites and forbidden lore

na never heard ov "Eternal Darkness" wish i wud ov known 10 yrz ago when it prob came out lol

Excactly! Its social commentary on where we are as a society. Barely out of the fucking woods. At the end they are saying they are no different than these children who slowly digressed into savages. These children had maintained order at first. But as soon as the conch shell, which represented social order, wasn't working anymore they digressed into their animalistic nature. "cell" and "the mist" dealt with this concept as well. With some people retaining their human qualities while others go into the prime directive survivor mode.

If you look at the title "The lord of the flies" it represents the evil intentions of mankind. Flies are supposed to represent desolation, death, and decay. The lord of the flies is ol' splitfoot himself lucifer.(lucem would argue against this point).

That is the point of the book though. It is a very fine line between civilized and animalistic. We are not too far removed from what we have become, and it's possible to return to that state

You can always find time for a book if you really want to. Sad thing is there is more truth in fiction than alot of the reality we come into contact with on a regular basis. You seem like a cultured person anyways, but if you read books it can only open up other avenues of thought for you. Plus people who read books generally retain knowledge better than that of an average person

Of course whenever books are talked about ima be mix. I enjoy reading Lovecraft and Poe and Billy Graham. Lois Lowry is pretty good she wrote the Giver series which i read has been given a green light for a movie. I love that series man its very thought provoking and sparks all kinda conversation about what is a "utopian" society if you can choose or listen to music or read or feel kinda like that movie Equalibrium.

Ive read some Anne Rice she ok but her books are slow like listening to a slow classical movement its interesting but also has potential to put u to sleep. The Series she did on Jesus was good but she didnt finish it cuz she went athiest again. She writes alot about gay vampires and lesbian witches haha. I want to read a book of hers called Cry to Heaven its about a Castrato and his ups and downs. If you dont know what a castrato is look it up cuz thats wut makes it interesting and if you ever hear one its haunting.

Im going to go to the old school after i finish Tom Gordon and read some HG Wells then maybe venture out some my goal is to read more this year than i did last year.

I remember loving the giver books in like 5th I believe. I can't really remember much about it, other than it only appeared to be a utopia. As you go along you slowly start to realize it really is a dystopia. It dealt with the notion of stripping away everybodys individuality  to achieve a sameness. I might go back and read that shit again. Might be different now that my brain is more fully developed.

Never cared to read any ann rice. I had an ex that was obsessed with all of her works. She said basically the same thing in a way you did. Only she said her books start to get preachy and boring once she started writing about god. The "Interview with a Vampire" movie was the shit though.

Ever hear of Orson Scott Card? He wrote a book called "The Ender Game" about a kid going into a training facility in space to be a soldier in an intergalactic war. I was enthralled with that book in middle school. Read it twice back to back, good shit man. I believe it is being made into a movie also

I ran out of stuff to read once so I read The Witching Hour by Anne Rice because my sister had it, that book blew me away. The sequel Lasher was great too, beyond that I really have no interest. I've looked at some other ones, but I'm just not really into vampires, which seems to be her specialty. That's why I mentioned her Mayfaire witches books because those are the only 2 I'll vouch for. I also liked the movie Interview with the Vampire, tried to read the book after I saw the movie way back in the day and gave up after 150 pages or so. I didn't mean to give the impression that I really like Anne Rice, just her Mayfaire witches books, those were great. I don't normally read about witches either, it was more about a really evil family legacy.

I'm sure she is a phenomenal writer, her books are always best sellers. I'm like you and just not too into the whole vampire thing. The sole reason I have never bothered to pick up any of her books.

I only got so far on Interview as well cuz its super freakin slow. And its written in like sections not chapters so the sections are like 60 pages or more til there is a break in the story and the action is very far apart one of the things i remember from that book is that the main vamp thats being interviewed cuts someones head off with a shovel. I'd like to read Memnoch The Devil it has an interresting concept that Lucem might like has to do with a devil trying to be the good guy. haha

Im looking forward to getting into that small HG Welles stack i got.

I knew his son was a writer but had no idea that he went by that name. I've never read anything by Tabitha King either, I think she writes Sci-Fi novels. I have one bookstore around me and it's a used bookstore, any book for $4. Some of them are brand new too, it's not bad at all. I'm all for discount books man, since I buy about 10 at a time. They can special order anything you want though if you for the full price, I'll check that dude out and see how he is. It's Stephen King's son, how bad could he be? Thanks for pointing that out man

Mos Def im curious on his stuff too. He's got some stories he's co wrote with him the latest is calld In The Tall Grass i think but the dude has a novel called Heart Shaped Box and Horns. So he's on some hardcore type stuff too. Just havent ventured to his novels yet.

So it ended up being Pat/Slu and myself continuing to talk about the books at this one. Who else reads good books out there?
