So I’ve been sick but I thought we should have a black history month thread. Share anybody you would like to celebrate in February.
I realize the forums resident racists will whine about “white history month” or will post up picks of horrible black people to cut this thread down but still, I think this has the potential to be informing and interesting. I’m curious to see who you got.
My first contribution will be: Countee Cullen
Dude was a fantastic poet during the Harlem Renaissance. I first read my favorite poem in a book on graffiti art. Someone had made it a mural.
I have never been able to find it again in that form but just as words is perfect:
This is not water running here,
These thick rebellious streams
That hurtle flesh and bone past fear
Down alleyways of dreamsThis is a wine that must flow on
Not caring how or where
So it has ways to flow upon
Where song is in the air.So it can woo an artful flute
With loose elastic lips
Its measurements of joy compute
With blithe, ecstatic hips.
The above is Harlem Wine. Below is Song in Spite of Myself:
Never love with all your heart,
It only ends in aching;
And bit by bit to the smallest part
That organ will be breaking.Never love with all your mind,
It only ends in fretting;
In musing on sweet joys behind,
too poignant for forgetting.Never love with all your soul,
for such there is no ending;
though a mind that frets may find control,
and a shattered heart find mending.Give but a grain of the heart’s rich seed,
Confine some undercover,
And when love goes, bid him God-speed,
and find another lover.
So yeah, show me the black people in history that you admire or have learned from please.
If you really believed that all lives matter we wouldn't need to say black lives matter

Gotta show love to Ali. He was understandably a seperatist, but he did so fucking much to help out the city of louisville. After he died the local talk radio did a whole day of people calling in with Ali stories. Some of em made me tear up. An incredible human being.

Black History Month is racist. Like, why can’t you celebrate black history every month like the rest of history? One month for black people so we can use it as a marketing technique just like Christmas or Halloween and your local television will make sure to air extra episodes of Fresh Prince while the history channel spends a whole month reminding black people how oppressed they were with out really showing them that their culture’s history has more than just slavery in it.
And that’s the most fucked up thing about this other than the fact that we separate history by race then dedicate this month in celebration. This month isn’t about black history, it’s about slave history. Nobody ever goes in discussing the creation of rock and roll or the African heritage, or hip hop or jazz or innovations black people have brought into the field of science or things like that. The always talk about slavery and oppression. Cool, that’s fine, can’t ignore it because it’s a piece of black history but it’s not the only piece of black history.
It’s a month for white self righteous liberals and conservatives to both pat them selves on their back and pretend to be progressive and cultured.

I wanted to go on the exact same rant. I figured everyone is sick of my we are all on the same playing field shit. History is history.
Soooo many people to point out, but part of me feels like we should give people praise because of their deeds, not because the color of their skin.

I actually agree with this excerpt with calling it racist. I once wrote a poem for a black history month poetry slam at my college about how I hate that we have black history month. I dislike but understand why it is separated and marked. And i dislike but understand why we emphasize that it is black history, even though it is all of our history.

And yet you are the first person to mention slavery in this thread. I mentioned a poet. Krunk went with a jazz singer. Slum talked about a remarkable athlete.

Or maybe it’s a chance to talk about specific people in history that often go overlooked because of our white supremacist narrative of our nation.

You can take that chance any month.
Oh, are you denying that Strange Fruit isn’t about slavery?
I want to talk about my main man Obama.
He brought America tons and tons of jobs during an economic collapse and prevented us from descending into a dark financial abyss by turning it into a slight speed bump. As we sit here with the luxuries of a warm house with the internet at our finger tips and the ability to put food in our bellies and clothes on our backs as well as the new consoles so we can play the latest cutting edge games with out the fear of being drafted into a chaotic war or being discriminated on for our religions. We can marry what gender we want and have the freedoms to open carry guns into national parks. We have to appreciate him for saving us from a potential crisis and realize we have it pretty good instead of painting our country as a baron wasteland destroyed by him. He truly was a remarkable piece of our history. One that doesn’t get enough recognition or appreciation for what he’s done for the few flaws he has made. Obama is great. Every month he’s great.
