Move the fuck on. I wouldn't/couldn't ever be friends with someone who hit me over some trivial shit, of course, I would've fought back. We would've had a full on knock down brawl. Either way, friendship over. Maybe you should learn to be a better person and not fight your friends, you'll end up with none. If you were such great friends why did you let it get to that point in the first place? Grow the fuck up dude, getting mad over childish name calling is exactly that, childish. Move on and grow up, you're the one at fault here.

Maybe things are different with me but I have fist fought my best friend twice and I've known him half my life. First time over a basketball game and a second time because of xanax....We always ended up being cool like a month later. If the dude is a true friend he will forget about it soon no matter who was in the wrong. If he doesn't, then well maybe he wasn't that much of a friend. To me a real man must be willing to swallow his pride and bury the hatchet. You did that with your apology letter considering nobody writes letters anymore.
