Yeah... but the news is not supposed to be entertaining... it's supposed to be informative... so you are willfully taking in bad information to make you happy and stroke your perspective... that's called willful ignorance... that's why it's bad. You are closing your mind and misinforming yourself.

Not sure why this is even a discussion all the news channels spout biased lies. Fox, CNN, NBC and ABC. They all cherry pick facts and falsify news.
No, no, they all tell half truths. Fox is the only one that actually just flat out makes shit up.

Since when is news not supposed to be entertaining? I'm talking about news shows and journalism. There would be zero market for it if it wasnt.
Imagine this:
Bomb went off in new York and one found in new jersey
Suspect detained after shootout
The end.
As someone who likes to read I love to see compositions of writers. Sure it's extra shit that ain't really needed but I find it engaging. Why even write if you can't put your own spin on it?
I don't watch news on tv so I can't really speak on that. It doesn't matter how much whoever lies on tv, there are still facts on there that you can weed through. If they didn't do their own analysis news shows would be like five minutes long.
Personally I love Vice. I realize they are a little left leaning but they are doing some really good work over there. I'm a little left leaning so I am naturally biased towards it.
I don't wanna speak for Psyral but I bet he was right leaning anyways, not because the news is telling him to be. Of course he is going to watch news that tends to match up with his views. It doesn't necessarily mean it shapes his views. It doesn't mean he believes every word that they say.
This is what I was trying to ask though, I guess I just worded it poorly. What is truth? It's so hard to find out the actual truth with all of this information. You'd think it'd be easier but all this information just muddys up the water for me

The point of the news is not to be entertaining it is there to inform you. Sure, they can try to entertain you to keep your attention while informing you, but informing you is prioritized over entertaining you.
How much information is true in the news source you go to is extremely important. That's what you are educating yourself with. If you are watching something that lies to you then you are poisoning your mind. Even if there are truths in there how are you supposed to know the difference? You won't. Not unless you use other news sources than the lying one, but he said he doesn't because they piss him off.
I know he had conservative views prior to watching Fox because he said left leaning media pisses him off. But it does warp your perception and give you blinders when they feed you bullshit, slander and even fear of the other side. Taking in different perspectives could open your mind or even change your perspective or even better give you an understanding of other perspectives so it's not always an us against them mentality. He's literally living in a bubble of ignorance when he chooses to get information from this one dishonest source.

So how do you know they are lying to you? Because some other news source told you so. That's all I was trying to say. How do you know what's a lie and who is lying about someone else lying and who is lying about someone else telling lies that they like to lie about while lying in bed.

It's just entertainment to me. And I don't mind closing my mind to politics and being willfully ignorant. If I was someone who voted then I would take it upon myself to look into more truth behind it all. The things that are important to me, like application programming, I do take seriously... to an extent. I have again been asked to teach at another programming conference this year. This is the third year I've done it. I keep getting asked back and this time I am teaching two classes. The "to an extent" can be explained in that I always teach all "juggalo-ed" up (except face paint). The last two years I received standing ovations at the end of the sessions. According to others participating, I was the only person ever to receive them. And this is for something as dry as Advanced C# Programming for DynaChange Rules. Programming is serious to me. It has been my job for over 20 years. I take certain things seriously, other things ... not so much. Politics falls into the "not so much" category.
So why do I come on here and discuss politics so much? Because it is fun. Because it is entertaining. Because I don't take it too seriously.

Check the facts. When Neil says that 97% of scientists say global warming is a man made problem look up where he got that statistic. It comes from a non peer reviewed paper. So the validity of that statistic is up in the air. Nobody knows how true that statistic is, I don't think there was an official poll. So for the validity of global warming I looked up a list of climate scientists, the people who's lives are dedicated to studying the climate, and see what they have to say. That's where I put my trust. All of them believe climate change is a man made threat. None of them think catastrophe is nearly as immediate as left leaning media makes it out to be and none of them have a reason to lie.
An example of Fox news lying is when they said that Obama was taking this huge vacation to a different country and claimed that he was joking about having the whole thing paid for by our taxes. There was absolutely no evidence that supported that claim. They couldn't even name a source for that information. It got so much attention that every other news station had to announce that it wasn't true. Fox news never brought it up again and pretended that it didn't even happen. Bill Maher called Bill O'reilly out on it. O'rielly admitted it was a lie and denied any accountability for it because he is a political annalist and not a news reporter. So when somebody on Fox admits the dishonesty of Fox you know Fox is lying.
A lot of weeding out what is true and what is not is checking the facts. Take a claim, look it up and see if there is any credible data that supports it. Or even listen to what people who claim a news source is lying are saying then research what they say. It's a lot of work, and it's complete bullshit that that much work has to be done just to be more informed, but that's how you know who is lying and who is not.

...What is truth? ...
This just reminded me of The Final Exam. Specifically the section on Epistemology - "Take a stand for or against truth. Prove the validity of your position."
Some of the other ones I liked from the exam are:
HISTORY: Describe the history of the papacy from its origins to the present, concentrating especially but not exclusively on its social, political, economic, religious, and philosophical impact on Europe, Asia, America, and Africa. Be brief, concise, and specific.
BIOLOGY: Create Life. Estimate the differences in subsequent human culture if this form of life had developed 500 million years earlier, with special attention to its probable effect on the English parliamentary system. Prove your thesis.
SOCIOLOGY: Estimate the sociological problems which might accompany the end of the world. Construct an experiment to test your theory.
PHYSICS: Explain the nature of matter.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Describe in detail. Be objective and specific.

To be clear I wasn't implying that fox doesn't lie. Some examples are much more clear cut than others.
I have no opinion either way on climate change. I've done zero research because it isn't something that I think about.
So did you talk to these actual scientists or did someone else regurgitate their work on a website? I'm making my point very poorly here. We spend hours going down rabbit holes and we still might not know the actual truth. Like you said we have to take the scientists word for it. I've never seen other galaxies because I've never looked through the hubble. I just have to assume that they exist.
I don't know. I just don't have the right words this time to express myself

No such thing as half-truth's. Although I am pretty sure your comment was sarcastically pointing out the ignorance of bias people but if you continue to do that some of these asshats will take up that banner and run with it like a fucking crippled midget with a gimpy leg.

I take it from interviews done or statements from the scientists. You know galaxies exist because they take pictures with the telescope. I know what you are saying, at a certain point we have to put our faith into certain people but just think, how much effort would it take to lie to us about other galaxies? Is it even possible to keep a lie like that private? What would be the gain? If they are lying to us about what they find in the sky then why isn't Pluto a planet anymore? You put your faith in something that is logically sound.

Half truth is only telling a piece of the story. So the information is true but it leaves out key pieces of information that completely change the context.

Yeah, just cause you use a part of the truth doesn't make it the truth. It just means you sugar coated facts to fit your purpose which is dishonest. In other words lying.
Anyone who watches any major news channel in my mind is a lemming. They are followers and sheep. The are being programmed by either racists or politically correct pansies to fit the mold that particular agenda prefers.
Who is more honest the racist saying he hates blacks and wishes he could use his right to bare arms to fix the issue.
Or The guy telling blacks their lives matter while buying a burger from McDonalds that notoriously underpays minorities.
That is the reality of it. You chose a hate filled party or a party that lies to your face while contributing to your decline in society. All these guys and gals may be fooled. But me, I think both sides are fucking ignorant.

Yep, he really got ya there, pendenjo.
But for real, as long as you admit that Fox News is just designed for ratings due to their entertainment-oriented approach, then I respect that.
Other than political correctness gone mad, climate change, and taxes, what other left-wing subjects boil your potato? Just curious.

I'm a free speech fundamentalist
Okay, I'll do it yet again, krunk. Free speech only pertains to government. Your freedom of speech means that your government (that's not a forum, not individuals, fuck-it's not even a private business) isn't allowed to create any laws that stifle your speech.
http://www.dictionary.com/brow.....-of-speech Or if you'd prefer; http://www.uscourts.gov/about-...../what-does.
So if I'm wrong, tell me where I'm wrong. What about me saying your source was shit involved free speech? I didn't think I was government and I damn sure wasn't aware that me giving an opinion was attempted law.
who provided an alternate source
Ah, so you did. Missed that. Fox news (along with MSNBC) doesn't typically shout "credible source" to me but they're both certainly better than the fuckin daily mail. But regardless, you were right about the story being legit. It just so happens that your reasoning (pic looks legit) was terrible.
for the media snobs out there. I'm also an Honors college graduate (as much as that doesn't impress some on this forum) who chooses not to need headlines or spun prose to convince me what to think of a crazy picture that seems legit. God Bless Murica,
What you have an honors in?
Regardless of what it is, you don't have to be a snob to cringe when someone says "the pic looks legit, therefor I believe it". That's a terrible reason to believe something. Seems like something you would know because, as others have said, you're usually good at citing sources. Which is precisely why I even bothered to reply to you in the first place. You seem smarter than the Daily Mail.
I find your comments that of an elitist cunt.
Eh, yeah, I can't really disagree with that. Doesn't mean I'm wrong though. Fuck it, Free speech right? I mean, since that phrase just means whatever we want it to mean and all.
