I gotta vent and get some opinions
A lot of my family friends and classmates are complete fucking nerds, and listen to electronic stuff, not saying its all bad, just giving some context.
and I swear to fucking god 70% of what they listen to is all remixes, whyyy???? Most good songs don’t need “touching up”, at least not that you can change with a re-recording, and fucking with the original recording often sucks the emotion right out.
But more so, ruins the intent of the song, my friend was doing a live stream a long while ago, and he has a playlist just like what I’m describing 100% fucking remixes. I remember the song “its over isn’t it” from Steven Universe coming on as a fast upbeat dance song, I mean, what the fuck, the original song is a melancholy emotional piece where a character is explaining her emotional struggles, why the fuck did you turn it into a dance song???????
Then there’s fucking talentless ass nightcore. Now nightcore works on a principle that all music is founded upon, changes, your ear doesn’t detect notes as music it detects changes in notes to give off the feeling behind it, so when you change the pitch and speed to a song you know it strikes you very much. Only problem is half the fucking time its a song that doesn’t fit or is just unnecessary. And just fucks up the pacing, I would be able to forgive some of it, after all it does work off of what I just said, but with one problem IT’S FUCKING TALENT-LESS! But oh well, whatever.
Then we get to the big boys, the big, disgusting, horrid, pieces of shit.
Such as a trap remix of Stan by eminem, yeah, you know, that tragedy story about when people take obsessions too far, surly we need to turn that into a heart pumping mindless idiot fest.
How about dumbfuck dubstep covers of metal songs, taking out all the raw energy from them and turning it to shit.
And other more mainstream examples, of taking a perfectly fine, often very emotional song and bastardizing it.
If you want to “tribute” a song you love and take it in another direction, where there’s a man who did that perfectly, somebody who took a song, changed the tone, made it arguably better, and all throughout remained faithful to the original intent of the song. His name is David Draiman, and he made the greatest version of the classic sound of silence that will ever exist. How did he do it, well, rather than making dumbfuck alterations to the original recording, he had this thing called a band, named Disturbed, and they practiced their whole lives and became real fucking musicians. You want to improve a great song, earn it.
Not saying some remixes can’t be the best version of the song, some songs are vapid and pointless, maybe just a short fun little thing that doesn’t matter much, and can be made into something kind of fun (spooky scary skeletons) I don’t like listening to it, but I can acknowledge it makes sense. Also sometimes the pacing of something doesn’t match the intent of the song, so you can kind of fix it.
But in general, man, most of these remixes are fucking pointless. Most people make fun of auto tuning, everyone does, even mindless pop fans acknowledge its talent-less, but the reason its actually bad is it takes the emotion out of the song, whatever that may be, it replaces it with a robotic husk. These remixes, are a million times worse, they just take a song and fucking butcher it. They try to force it into something that doesn’t fit the original spirit of the song. Its a disgrace. You want to improve or pay homage to a song, get off your ass and make a fucking cover. If you’re just some EDM composer, and you can’t fucking do that, like maybe you don’t have a singer, then what business do you have “making” songs with singing in them.
Sorry, I’m mad, I know nobody has read this far. Tootles.

There’s this thing about our brains that takes a lot of training to undo, it’s called confirmation bias. Basically it’s easier for our brains to process information that is familiar to us. And information can be anything. Do you know why people will sit in the same seats at lunch or at a bar or wherever they frequent that doesn’t have assigned seating? Because sitting a new place makes their brains work harder.
If you drive, you tend to take the same routes even though the time difference is null.
When you drive somewhere new and you turn the radio down to focus, it’s because there’s too much information going on in your brain at once.
This influences all aspects of your life without you even realizing it. From the music you listen to, to the languages you speak, to your politics and religion and sex life and everything else.
The simple answer to your question of why do people like remixes? Because they are familiar enough without being exactly the same as previous information. You can listen to it, be stimulated, and then keep listening to it until it becomes the dominant information in your brain.
You gotta let people like what they’re gonna like. For whatever reason, you’ve tapped into a brainwave that’s different from your peers. You are curious and creative and looking to experience something different. That’s why the shit is underground. It’s rejecting the cookie cutter, lazy, formulaic drivel.
I spent a lot of years getting angry that people didn’t like the cool shit I was into and it doesn’t go anywhere. You’re better off letting them have theirs and celebrating your own shit when you can.

I totally get whatchya saying, and I already mentioned how remixes kind of work, your ear hears differences in sound, so when its changed its audibly very striking, I just think covers do it 1 billion times better. But yeah, I know whatchya mean. I will say that I don’t think that’s what confirmation bias means, I’m pretty much certain it means when you actively look for evidence that fits your rhetoric in a bias way, doesn’t have much to do with familiar information (I think). But besides that I get what your saying.

Nah it’s a misconception. Confirmation bias is typically spoken about in regards to political views and how we seek out news that agrees with our already held beliefs but it’s a process of information acquisition. Our brains are very inefficient at data reception despite being utterly brilliant at other facets of learning like pattern recognition.
Basically we find patterns and then ignore nearly all of the information in the pattern except what’s just of interest in the moment.
And mind you im using information to mean signals (anything we sense) and relevant (what we define as an experience) in ways that are atypical because there isn’t really language that is more precise.

Some songs are amazing and dont need to be messed with.
Im not feeling the Luda remake. Metallica should have left alone Segers Turn the page. Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart and 4 Non Blondes – Whats Up, didnt need a dance version. I went to a concert 2-3 years ago and the group sang GooGoo Dolls – Iris exactly like the GooGoo Dolls. To me they were trying to steal my youth and give it to new people. Let these kids enjoy the classics.
Ill admit some deserve credit for attempting but few and very far between.
@chevy2dope, if i were you man id stop thinking like me right now.

Rolling Stones did not do “Too Proud To Beg” any justice. It’s okay that they did it, but it was so inferior that it shouldn’t get radio play to confuse muthafuckas about the awesomeness of the original.
I hate Metallica’s spin on Seger, too.
Reba did good with “The Night That the Lights Went Out in Georgia”.
Jimi Hendrix famously superseded “All Along the Watchtower” from Dylan… as did Johnny Cash with “Hurt” from Trent Reznor… the list goes on. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, but either way it is still paying homage to someone from before, so it is all love.
This all being said, I wonder if ICP are going to do more than just cover ICP songs at this acoustic show. I’ve been wanting to see them do this for years, so whoever goes, enjoy to the fullest!

Same. JC and I were talking about how we’d like to see it a while back. I hope they film it.
I hope they don’t do covers tho. I hope they do some of their less moshy songs that aren’t great for a regular show but might have interesting stories.

The email said they’ll be making us walk thru a metal detector. No phones will be allowed for fear of someone filming it. They are selling disposable cameras cheap, so there will be blurry images available. Shortly after we find the nearest place that still develops film. Do they make those? (Kidding)
Im assuming they will be filming it themselves and giving it as a VIP give away or putting an additional $150 price tag on it. Either way they want all the filming to be theirs.
I dont wanna give away all the details so ill post screen shots of the email after Saturdays show.

I gotta disagree about Johnny Cash doing Hurt. I feel it was a great attempt done at the most appropriate time in his career. Or end of, if you will. For that i give him mad props. I feel he put more emotion into it and meant it all, but NIN nailed it the first go round.
