Are you the type of guy that stands around and waits for someone for the “team lift” or do you just grab it and do it anyways? I work with a guy that’s 50 something that I try and take it easy on. We work with a 30 something year old that we can never find. To get anything done I have to walk to the other side of the shop and get someone and waste 5 mins or I can just grab whatever and throw it up on the bench or in the machine. I save time and cut out the middle man. Fuck that, im capable of almost anything when I wanna get stuff done.

The guys I hired to raise the roof in the bathroom were surprised as fuck I put drywall up on the kitchen ceiling by myself. They doubted me and I showed them. Basically its a get shit done or wait around for something to happen deal. No offence to your hairnet wearing ass. lol

@Drunkalo

Yeah, I quoted you from a locked topic to continue the convo LOL.

ANYWHORE! No, unless it is too heavy for me to physically lift it, I don't wait on anyone to help me team lift. We do have many motors and whatnot that weigh over 300 lbs. so sometimes its not feasable.

And who you hatin on with my hairnet wearin ass... You really want my 2 foot long hairs or 1 foot long beard hairs in your taco bell beans? Didn't think so fool! (If you answered yes then.... ummm.... ewww?). Its an odd thing in the food industry man, they actually care about hand washing, hair nets, and even cleaning the bird shit out of the parking lot every 2 hours so nobody tracks it in on their shoes to cross-contaminate the food.

I'm the guy that's 30-something and is never around at my job when I can get away with it.... I'm lazy.... whatever lol.

Yah man, keep the hairnet. I got a coupon for the local joint $4 off a haircut. Ill bring it over 2:10.

I worked a job in a brake caliper manufacturing plant. They made you wear hairnets. A hair in the rubber boot around the piston wont let it seal properly and can cause people to die. I did half a shift and left at lunchtime. The job was ridiculously fast.

I work my own hours, boss don't mind just as long as I'm there. And I'm training a few people at work. Works good to me. Maybe they'll let me gather this year.

Ain't no Future in being a brown nosing company man, unless you own the company.

Clock in...do what you have to..clock out.

Younger people get fed that hard work pays off bullshit, older people know better.

Many factors determine if you move up or not and unfortunately just working hard is not one of them.

One word, Nepotism.

Hanging a ceiling by yourself, ok, it's called a T.

Usually the sheetrock you hang is far less thinner and lighter than what you put on your walls. Measure, cut, hang, mud, sand, texture then on to painting. Fuck paying someone to do that, unless your wanting specialty or custom work done.

So lemme get this straight, Drunkalo, you can hang sheetrock yourself but need AAA to come change your flat tire for you?

Something's not adding up here brotha.

@Karacalla My drywalling was a little more elaborate than a "T". I had a big square made from lumber scraps with hinges and a lip. Screwed one end to the ceiling, put drywall on it, then used the "t" to lift the sagging end. Ill have to sit and draw a picture some time. I was pretty proud of that one.

The "calling AAA" your refering to was hypothetical. I rebuilt my first transmission at 17. I change my own flat tires, brakes and rotors,  oil, and sometimes wiper blades, depending on my mood. Sometimes im lazy and have Jiffy Lube handle it. Lol ok, last time i had a flat tire i popped the trunk and my jack was rusted and froze solid to the trunk bottom. Calling AAA was pretty mandatory then. I too have a floor jack in my garage for work at home, dont normally carry it in my car tho.

You my friend are over killing it with a 7000 lb jack for your Prius. I mean unless you often stop and help school busses full of children with flats, its completely unjustifiable.

I have changed all of my tires but one.. similar to your story, Drunk, my jack was rusted/frozen shut and it was too dark, cold and dangerous on that I-95 highway to do much else.... long (and funny) story short, a cop sort of helped me out but there is much more to that tale.

Anyway, I agree with you about "hard work" there, Kara. I wasted most of life trying to "hard work" my way to something better. I neglected my intelligence and street smarts, kind of always subconsciously thinking that I should just work myself to a pulp to do an honest day's labor. What a crock of shit lol... some of the hardest jobs I've ever had, like janitor, grinder, truck driver, etc were 50x harder than what I do today but I got paid almost nothing. I did these jobs for years and years. I always thought that it was ME that was the problem. But I knew that I was the "hardest worker ever" , and was just straight perplexed. I sold some shrooms here and there, but I didnt do it on a mass level. I never could do shit, like travel or go on a fun vacation.

Turns out it was simply the upstate NY economy, and also me being unwilling to let myself use my brain instead of my physical attributes. I could blame my dad for all of this (he instilled the "hard work or nothing" mentality in me and always relegated educated people as faggots), but I dont. It is all my own fault. I tried to escape NY once and did well for a bit. Unfortunately that was cut short by terrible experiences in North Carolina, but that's another story. . . This time I escaped to Colorado and sell weed legally. I make more money overall than the other jobs, and the only heavy lifting I do is ounces of herb lol.

However, this is paradoxical, as well... I love my job but it has it's many issues. I also get much more mentally exhausted than physically, which takes some getting used to. It is not AT ALL an easy job. I just make it look easy, because I've been doing it almost t years and I school it. New hires observe me as customers first and think that it's just as easy as I come across. Then they typically cannot handle the job requirements or they let their personal vices get the better of them. Like any other gig, really.

George Carlin once said, "it's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."

To be honest, the richest people in our country do some of the least amounts of work. It's bullshit when people say, "These multi millionaires and billionaires work hard for their money!" And we all know it. I worked harder than that when I was 13 de-tasseling corn fields in Nebraska.

This thread made me think about life and how aside from training and one day I've never really worked a McJob.
"Oh, So you're too good to work fast food." Yeah, I am. So is anyone with at least a GED and some common sense.

Like holy shit, If the best job you can get is fast food or factory work, MOVE.
Use your brain, It's way less work and the pay is much better.
I miss making $3,000 a month for sitting on my ass and helping stupid people.

That's just it, people get complacent and are willing to live out they're lives in an economically stressed environment because either their family has lived in that one place for years or because their too chicken shit to take the plunge and strive for something better.

Well shucks, my granddaddy was a coal miner, so was my daddy, that's what I'm going to be, and hopefully my son continues the legacy.

SMDH.

It's a mental illness.

America is a BIG place, as well as the rest of the world, don't have a defeatist attitude and anything is possible.

Most Americans live the opposite of The American dream. Minorities come to this country, from third world countries, open up a business and actually live out that philosophy. Why? Because they realize how special and unique this place is compared to their homeland while a lot of natives here just submit and become part of the machine.

This place has so many pitfalls and ways to keep you looking down and keeping you there, the secret is to read in between the lines and navigate throughout the bullshit to prosperity.

Even if you try and fail, at least you tried.

Most people will not even do that. They bitch, whine and moan about how bad their life is and use every excuse to justify why, but never put any energy into changing it. Defeatist are THE worst kind of people to have around you.

Work smart, not hard.

I once had a job where I put in the man hours and hard work. First to arrive, last to leave, always on call, extremely physically and mentally challenging.

This is what I was taught as a kid, drilled into my head by the previous two generations that came before me. I was responsible for multiple people and had to deal with all the bullshit that came with that. I was never a brown noser or a kiss ass, I just outworked everyone I started off with.

One day my boss, whom had been my boss since the beginning of my career, mentor,  and at this point somewhat of a personal friend, takes me out to lunch. He was retiring in a month and word around the water cooler was I was going to move up and take his spot. I had just got married, had my first kid, signed a thirty year mortgage and my wife was going to college.

This was it, this was the moment I'd had sacrificed so much of my time for, all that hard work, I'd previously spent time in the prison system, got out, and turned everything thing around. I defied the odds and beat the statistics.

This was it.

Just me and him sitting at a table ordering our lunch in an upscale restaurant.

How's the kid..the wife...all the pleasantries was asked of me. We ordered, our food came, we ate.

Nothing.

As hes pulling out the company card and giving it to our waitress he clears his throat and begins...

Where you've started from and ended up at is truly something. Nobody who's worked for you has ever complained and for the most part, the general consensus among the workers are that your a fair person. You know the ins and outs of the company and have proven yourself under pressure multiple times.

As you know I'm retiring soon and someone's going to have to fill that void and I'm going to need your help with this.

Here it comes is what I was thinking...

My son graduated from college last month and he's going to need all the assistance he can get to learn the daily duties of his new role as my replacement. So I'm going to need you to step up and give him a hand until he settles in. The official announcement will be made tomorrow letting the workers know.

When we got back he returned to his office and I returned to the workers, the people who worked under me greeted me by saying 'So how's it feel, boss?' 'Do you get his company truck or do they give you a new one?' Shaking my hand, patting me on the back...they had no clue.

I called my wife and told her and she was livid, I asked her what should I do? She told me to always remember my self worth.

I gathered my stuff and left. I'm glad I was still kind of young when I learned that lesson. Old Mr Dangerous hit the nail on the head with that Picture.

It was tuff, but I worked two jobs afterwards to make ends meet and to let my wife finish school, then I put my self through school to do what I do now and am grateful for that experience.

The guys son ran the division I used to work in, into the ground and it was eventually shut down and sold off.

A part of me was glad, but for the most part I couldn't stop thinking about all the decent people who got laid off. And this was around the time of the great recession in the late 00's.

Never be afraid to take risks in life. Who you were in the past and who you are now, never has to dictate who you will become.

You always have a choice.

This is some good convo right here.

Like I said before... I couldnt thrive in upstate ny...  so after I got married and out of a quick jail excursion we moved to NC. More opportunities there. Some tragedies happened, so we did 4 years there, quit our jobs after 2 week notice, drove cross country, went back to NY... worst economic time in our lives, big mistake going back there. Wasted about 4 years doing awful jobs for almost nothing so in between we both decided to finish up those college degrees that we left dangling years back because we couldn't afford it... we both graduated, me with one degree, her with 3... saved up a little bit of money after my FedEx job didnt work out and we decided to have kids... moved to Colorado now we are thriving better than ever.

All that above has much more to it and is a long story, but one thing yall may notice is that WE FAILED SEVERAL TIMES. We WASTED TIME WORKING JOBS THAT WERE A JOKE. I cannot emphasize this enough.

And dont think that I didnt get beat down from this in the process. I threw bitch ass bitchboy fits that I would never let anyone see publicly and considered giving up. . . But not really. Just like J said in his book: Failure was NEVER an option.

Madrox: "I dont understand or comprehend the word 'quit' cus it's not in my vocabulary; I dont understand that shit"

In September we will have been out here for 5 years. I even started a thread about it somewhere. I unintentionally inspired some people to take the leap and some have made it and others folded. The ones that tried the hardest did the best. The ones with the "no fail" mentality.

I could go on all day about this stuff, because I may not be the smartest guy, but I know what matters in life and I am very grateful for what we have been able to achieve.

This is difficult. American culture is a very individualistic society. Some cultures are much more collectivist. Here in Korea, there's a really high elder poverty rate, which is only to get worse because population growth and new births have slowed to a near halt.

A lot of older people are killing themselves because they don't want to be a burden to their families. You see people working in their 70s and 80s. Most taxi and bus drivers are older men. Farmers. Etc. I can imagine they're pretty bitter. They lived through a civil war and saw Korea become a technological and economic powerhouse and they have shit to show for it.

Also, this is a completely different topic, but I don't believe in free will.

Dude, you have no fucking idea how much of an impact this song has had on my life. I can honestly say that were it not for hearing CNT there's a good chance I never would have tried to do anything with my life.

"It's up to you, to make a change but you don't and I can't figure out why you won't"
17 year old me: Fuck, that's a good point. *Applies for first job*

Seriously, I needed this right now. Shit is not going well for me and things are uncertain. Even so I don't want to just give up, nothing comes from giving up, I've met the kind of people who just give up and fuck that, I want more from life. Really just a plot of land in a legal state with a trailer faaaaar out in the country. Simple, peaceful, achievable.

American culture is many things, much of it a complete clusterfuck due to a government that values corporate profits over literally everything else. The people who run this country DO NOT GIVE A SINGLE FUCK about the well being of the average american. All they want is for you to give them a cut of the money you've earned so they can buy more military shit that we don't need.  Fuck fixing roads and bridges, fuck education, fuck healthcare, PAY YOUR TAXES OR GO TO PRISON!
Ya know, unless you're the head of a corporation, then you don't have to pay a single dime in taxes because you're special.
Wooo Merica!

As for the elderly here, Yeah, I'm kind of amazed how many elderly people work at grocery stores. It's sad but I get it because it's either work to death or just die. For most there is no in between.

I was literally going to say the same thing.

I'm typically the person that doesn't wait but it's fucking stupid on my part. I'll work my ass off for a company that doesn't take care of me as I barely scrape by. All of my time goes to being somewhere I don't want to be, my time away from work I'm too exhausted to enjoy it, and I'll slowly destroy my body through the labor. It's more of a pride thing, I guess, but still. Unless it makes things harder on me, I can't hate my lazier coworkers at all. I can't act pretentious over my work ethic, either. I do end up getting adored by my bosses and they tend to try and get me raises, but that's because I'm also likable (somehow) and I tend to get to know my employers.

Essentially, unless you're fairly well taken care of, don't over exert yourself. Don't let the employers take advantage of you and push you around. In the face of being exploited by your job, being lazy is kind of revolutionary. Also, mental health is just as important is your physical health so don't be afraid to take time off if you aren't feeling well or if you're dealing with emotional problems. It's better for both you and your coworkers most of the time.

Oh, and don't ever be a teacher. Especially in the hood.

Technically they do, they just don't because they find loop holes that they pay politicians not to fix and the politicians comply because we live in a country run by corporations. Welcome to unchecked Capitalism. Where our government lies to us so the rich can get richer and we have no back up plan when the market moves away from industrial production as we're replaced with cheap foreign labor and automation. I don't mind taxes if I like where my taxes go. I currently don't.
