I just left work because I'm full of rage.
Here's what happened so far:
Fridays at the dispensary are always busy. I'm the lead today, and I was doing budtending on one side with the new guy on the other. After about 8 customers I asked another coworker to jump in so j could handle some money deals in the back. I came out and went to the bathroom. When I returned, a black gentleman was complaining to the manager about something. I heard "offended me" etc so I'm like what the hell? I asked my one guy what was said or done, he claimed he didnt know. The new guy said it was something I had said.
There was zero discussion of race that day, besides customers discussing the film "Get Out" in the back. So that may have been a "trigger" lol.
The store manager took him aside and I walked in front of everyone to have a chat, but the man said he wasnt ready to talk with me yet. Keep in mind that I had just come out from taking a piss. Completely clueless. So I got angry and embarassed in front of a huge crew of regulars and travellers who all looked so uncomfortable. Finally I went to my car to blow it off.
The black man finally came out and we saw eachother so I got out and talked with him. He said "first off I'm a military veteran and I take care of your families and blah blah blah I'm a black man etc". I let him finish. Then I said, "you didnt hear me say anything. You just admitted this, that my coworker, the new guy, apologized to you for something I had said. . Also, I hate to be that guy, buy my oldest brother was a Lieutenant in the Guard, and he fought and DIED for our country. I also hate to be that guy, but one of my nieces and one of my nephews is black. I hate saying that old line but it goes with this - look me in my eyes and tell me if I am bullshitting you about saying anything offensive about you or the military." I had my finger on my eyeball and we held a gaze. He said that he didnt think so.
I then said, with a respectful yet good-hearted smile "I'm sorry to have to do this, too, but I demand an apology." I offered my hand and he said "I'm not ready to do that yet". We chatted another 20 seconds and he and his pride turned and walked away. He got into his friend's vehicle and they left. Thankfully, two regulars who were leaving pulled up in their cars and thanked me for always being a good worker, and the other one chatted with me about similar things that had happened at his occupation. I went back in, yelled a bit through the lobby window and said I'm taking another 10 minute break to the manager.
I was not calmed down by ten minutes, so I came in, in front of a lot of people who were in line while the whole thing happened, went to the back, and told them that if I didnt leave I would hurt someone. I told her to write me up if she wanted, but she said she wouldn't.
The black man that I talked with had mentioned that he heard nothing, but said The New Guy made as if to say that I was being racist while I went to the bathroom briefly. This is interesting because:
- this kid was just written up by us for chronic lateness last week. I told him to straighten up.
- this very morning, he said he had forgotten his MED badge (you HAVE to have it on to work in a dispensary.. if you dont, legal action and/or humongous fines). Being a bit justifiably angry by his constant ignorance, I had sternly told him to "GO GET IT!". I believe he was feeling embarassed or just mad because he couldnt slack off.
- I've known the kid for a few years. He is known to do some passive aggressive manipulation when he is either miffed, jealous, or just plain feeling devious. He is also frail and meek, not one to confront or use fisticuffs to display his angst.
So, I hope I'm not leaving anything too vital out. But the facts are:
1. I never said anything about race at all, let alone something offensive.
2. This all happened during my absence.
3. I am losing money currently due to righteous anger and embarrassment.
I didnt realize this all in my head until now, so I informed my manager through text of my theory (they're all on my side as far as I can tell... I'm the senior employee of the company and even outrank the manager). She hasn't gotten back but I told her I cant work with the kid unless he is willing to talk. Because I will get angry.
It was nice to have my regular customer friends stick up for me. But it's still infuriating
Any thoughts? I had a similar situation happen years back at another job where I told a white girl-black dude couple "see you, guys!" And the white girl thought I said "see you, niggers (or niggas, who knows".
Do I just need to speak clearer or are there a lot of troublemakers out there?
P.S. - another black veteran was served before him, he is a regular who always complains that we dont give him his military discount on certain deals (I told him that "not even we get discounts on those" as in 'us employees'". Perhaps this is where the black guy claims that my coworker heard me say something like "them people".

Some people just love recreational outrage. As long as you know what's in your heart that's all that matters...unless of course they fired you for some shit you didnt do or say.
Not sure you should have demanded an apology. You didnt need to give him one either though.

I demanded the apology in private, outside the building. If that means anything.
He wouldn't shake my hand. I read a great quote once, "even if you're about to fight a man to his death, you do not shun a handshake of respect".
Also, Slum, I did not apologize. I say "sorry for being that guy" etc as a preface to the conversation, but I never apologized for what I may or may not have said. I'll die before that happens (lol which is probably how he feels right now).

Seriously, The whole situation was fucked. There are always customers who love nothing more than to see how much extra they can get from literally any business they enter, then bitch if they don't get it.
As for the worthless employee, because that's what the fuck he is. How do you get one of the best jobs in the country and not appreciate it?! I'd be there early every day picking up as much knowledge as I can on both the business and growing aspects.
Primal side of me says sweep his legs out from under him and slam his face into something on the way down for being a shit.
Logical side, Talk to your bosses and see about finding a replacement. Someone who actually gives a shit.

My manager swears that the kid says he did not say anything negative or try to bait me. And he has a few witnesses. So I suppose I can release my anger at him as the target unless I find out otherwise.
Now it just seems like the black fellow either imagined it or fabricated the entire thing just because. So he is always going to be on my radar. If he comes in when I work, I will NOT be able to restrain myself from starting shit with him now. Call me childish, but i can be a vengeful dude.
The good thing is, my coworkers are all on my side about this. They have never seen me get that angry other than a couple other times. Once at a customer, once at a general manager.
I dont even know if I want to do this shit anymore.
Also, he can fuck off with even thinking about trying the PTSD route. I have significant PTSD as well, and I deal with the public every day. I am known and revered in my company for being stellar at dealing with difficult customers. This one was different. I HATE to have my integrity questioned.
As far as the coworker, I had had enough of his and others being late last week. I called the manager and told her this was enough. She replied that "we dont have many people to choose from in this area" (which is true, but irrelevant) but I told her to stop letting people walk all over her. So he and 2 others were written up.
Listen, some of you may find this hard to believe, but I've NEVER been late to a job. Never. There have been situations where an emergency happened and I had to call ahead that I wouldn't be able to make it (my daughter getting very sick, for instance). But I've never been late. The idea of being late shouldn't even be an option. I dont get it. And it's not just the younger ones. People older than me are frequently late, as well. No one appreciates shit in this planet.
Ah well. Thanks yall for the feedback, I do appreciate it. Happy fridayyyyyyy!!!

okay so as it turns out the part that I really enjoyed was the crunchy outer layer, the rest was vomit inducing, so I'm putting it back in the oven to get an all around crunch.
So a buddy of mine (very heavy drinker but a really great guy) decided to google some things one night. Now he had a problem of maxing out credit cards and receiving things in the mail that he had forgotten that he ordered. But this night was different... He was looking for recipes. He came into work one day with a bag of thick orangey vomit and said you have to try this. My reaction was 'um, nope, what the fuck is that?' He told me about his random googling and said he ran across a directorial to get spicy cheetos and put a drip of lemon in it and shake it up. Something went terribly wrong with the drip aparently. I never did try it. A short while later he went to the doctor and he has very high cholesterol, high blood pressure and im pretty sure hes going to have liver failure within the next few years. Be very careful with cheetos!
OMD, chill out man. I think you did the right thing in both situations. Keep dwelling on it and your gonna start getting migraines during intercourse...
Yeah bitches, im that short gentleman mentioned in that youtube video.
And the very nice, level headed guy from that other youtube video.
