For many/most of us rap is our favorite genre, I was wondering why for the rest of you? My favorite genres are rap and metal, both for basically opposite reasons, the reason for rap being the sheer efficiency of it, for as much as I love metal there's no way that it can tell a full story or give as much detail as a rap song because it just can't have as much words. There's no way you can get a song like dance with the devil by immortal technique in any other genre, not that every song needs to tell a story, but sheer number of words is still a plus in many other things (ps. if you haven't heard dance with the devil go listen to it, now, like right now, fuck it I'll link it.
Rap is like a written text except 10000000% more interesting, engaging and memorable because you get to hear it, and add the extra emotion of somebodies delivery and the feeling of the beat. That's actually why I love ICP, more so than TONS of other rappers they love telling stories, and I think they do it better than many others.
Rap is also extremely personal to the rapper, or at least whatever character they portray, whether it be who they really are or a work of fiction, because, yet again, the ability to explain who they are and their stories.
Anyways, I'm writing all this because I was trying to convince a metalhead friend of mine that rap isn't pointless and I was wondering if ya'll agree with how I view it.

I love ICP's storytelling but i feel its their creativity that pushes them over most rap acts..
Personally i love creative song concepts & lyricism in rap, first and foremost.. i wanna hear a song about somethin ive never heard before or put in a new creative/punchline/substance-filled way..
I also love the creativity in the music of hip hop, which originated in sampling.. I prefer sampling over "brand new production" because of the sense of nostalgia it brings plus it's always dope when you hear someone flip a sample, crazy-like..
im glad to hear youre into rap for the substance.. too many people, especially in this scene, just wanna hear a catchy fast flow.. smh..

There is a certain freedom in rap that you can't get with most other genres.
Rap can borrow sounds, feelings, ideas and tropes from any other genre and still be rap. You can have rap songs with the dark and nasty atmosphere of black metal or have rap that takes the fury and energy of punk or rap with the soul and emotion of the blues. It's really really free in ways you can create and people are finally starting to realize just how free rap is.

This is one of maybe 26 things dope I've seen you type, Ferre.
I'll add that rap is despair put to a beat, used either bittersweet, terrified, or joyous. Whenever it becomes a generator of radio revenue, it's no longer rap.

I like how much it can be customized. You can take a beat, alter it slightly, add in a few new samples, write some new lyrics, and it's a new song. Or you can keep the same lyrics and completely change the beat and it doesn't sound like the same song even though none of the writing changed. Other genres can't do that.

So ICP, Nas, Biggie, 2pac, Tech N9ne, NWA, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill, The Geto Boys, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, and many more aren't real rap to you?
And in an ironic twist of fate, that means you consider Twiztid to be real rap and none of those other guys.
Or better yet, you'd also consider XXXTentacion, Lil Peep and Trippie Redd, maybe even Tekashi69, to be realer rap than those names listed.

Never said it wasnt real rap. It becomes "pop rap", by default. No matter real it is. And what fucking radio plays Geto Boys outside of satellite radio? Maybe in Texas. I WISH the radio played Geto Boys.
Wasnt supposed to be a debate, anus-sampler.

You said when the radio gets revenue it's no longer rap.
I've heard them on our local throwback station.

mainstream/commercial rappers are Rappers..independent artist who care about the craft are Emcees..
Hip hop didn't start with 8 mile. The original MCs who created the craft and the term were about moving crowds and they weren't super miracle lyrical rappers. They were about partying and having a good time. So with that in mind I'd say that Migos & Lil Uzi Vert are more MCs than an Immortal Technique. People at a Migos concert move and dance and get live and rap the lyrics back. Go to any kind of back packer show with 'real' MCs and the most movement is bobbing your head, raising your hands and most people aren't shouting the lyrics back. Hardly any kind of movement.

Oh, so the definition changed because a small piece of the culture thinks they're better than everybody else?
Nah, the definition is going back. Fuck a back packer "Hip Hop purest" who lies about what hip hop is to fit his pretentious view on music. Uncultured, no taste, closed minded having ass, jumping on a boring ass beat because you aren't passionate enough bout the culture to respect a producer "it's about the lyrics" excuse making, jealous, got no bitches at my shows just corny dudes awkwardly moving hands up and down, 30 year old self proclaimed MCs.

lol @small piece.. im pretty sure its the majority..damn it sounds like someones got some issues with backpackers.. i would consider a hip hop purest to be a lil different.. i agree that both are generally closed-minded, in a sense.. not sure if i'd consider myself either..
Yeah, a small piece. Most of the culture just doesn't give a shit. Unless you're pretentious enough to say Lil Pump's fans aren't part of the culture.
