'Q' is a person who posted anonymously to 4chan(I double checked, it was 4chan) who claimed to have Q level clearance.

On 4chan, 'anon' is frequently used for anonymous posters. Thus this particular anon became known to 4channers as "qanon" or just "q". The name qanon was LATER used to identify both the conspiracy theory and the group as a whole who believe in it. But qanon fucking STARTED as a 4chan nickname to refer to the anon user who claimed to have Q level clearance.
