Click here for a nice Youtube playlist of the album.
Okay, so I hope this doesn’t break any rules? I’ve never posted here before.
I’m a little biased, because the Mountain Goats are my favorite group, but I really like this album. It just sounds really good. Unfortunately, I was never really into wrestling, so I really only get to enjoy it from a distance; a lot of the references are utterly lost on me.
I know a lot of you guys are into wrestling, though, so maybe some of you could appreciate it more?
Just thought I’d share, and see if anyone else around here was into tMG.

Nah it’s cool bruh, I figured tMG probably wouldn’t be to the taste of a lot of folks here.
If it endears you to them any, though, I first heard them on Moral Orel. Does anyone still remember that show? They used the songs Old College Try and No Children to highlight the failed nature of Bloberta and Clay’s marriage.
I wrote an essay over Old College Try for my freshman English course in community college, lol.

Actually the real three enforced rules are
1: No illegal download links
2: No spamming
3: No porn
I think there are actually a few more but they aren’t enforced.
Back on Topic: This might actually be fresh or will be stale as fuck…Ill find out tomorrow when I get ready for work thanks for posting.

Thanks for the clarification, Brendan.
As far as this album goes, I like The Legend of Chavo Guerrero and Animal Mask best. The album as a whole is probably some of John’s more complex tMG work, musically speaking; depending on the era he tends to fall somewhere between “a dude with an acoustic guitar” and “local garage band” in sound, but this album has some big band elements and I like it.

Boop boop, necro’ing this because I really want to talk about this album.
I’ve spent a lot of time with it in the past couple months, and it grows on you. (Really, tMG as a whole is like that — even as a long-standing fan, it takes a few times through an album for me to really come to appreciate it.) It’s probably one of the most complex of John Darnielle’s albums thus far, with a lot of big band elements.
As I mentioned before, I’ve never followed wrestling, but the album has piqued my interest. Many of the songs — like the Legend of Chavo Guerrero and Hair Match — are told, in part, through the eyes of a child who truly loved these stage personas; the Legend of Chavo Guerrero is especially powerful to me because — like John Darnielle — I was a child who had to look to fiction for the guidance that I failed to get from my guardian figures.
Choked Out has become something of a power anthem to me, since beginning this thread. There is an immense amount of desperation and struggle in the voice of the song, but also sheer tenacity. It paints a picture of being most alive at your lowest point, which is a common theme in John’s music (see also: Steal Smoked Fish, or pretty much anything on the album The Sunset Tree.)
The Ballad of Bull Ramos is heartwarming, though I barely know who Bull Ramos was. The connecting theme is satisfaction in a simple life, even after the ‘glory days’ have ended. Yes, he dies, and after a woefully slow decline, but — at least in John’s mind — there is always beauty in a life having been lived.
I think all the songs paint a vivid picture, but I’m rather biased. It’s my opinion that it’s a point in the album’s credit that it could make someone who, frankly, could care less about Manly Soap Operas TM at least passingly interested in the characters, the actors, and their fates.
