it was a written battle but bringing a notepad was unheard of, let alone frowned upon.. he was doing terrible before he basically said “fuck it, i dont remember the rest” and pulled the pad out.. he disappeared, as he should of.. he may of earned mc’s respect on wax but he rightfully lost it after that atrocious PUBLIC display.. it’s a lot easier to be dope when you can do 10000 takes.. he proved there’s a new breed of emcees that dominates the old school..
smh @ “the greatest mc to bless the pen”.. clearly you stopped listening to hip hop in the 90’s, haha..

Nonsense. Indeed that shit was bizarre and sad in many ways. But the other dude, while having some straight genius lines at times, mostly relied on FUCKING YELLING. Dude straight up pissed me off. He slugged that other emcee because he couldn’t take a few disses and felt itnimidated. That shit is so lame, a disgrace to the art that happens all the time. The other guy did the same thing later down the road.
Canibus deserves legacy respect regardless of that moment. People who say an emcee ain’t an emcee if they don’t freestyle, man that’s stupid as hell.

no clue what youre talkin about.. are you sayin Diz punched someone in another battle?? are you talkin about the math battle?? canibus lost to himself so Diz doesnt really matter here.. not sure what’s nonsensical about my post.. canibus wouldve lost to anybody performing like that, while diz wouldve won vs just about anybody with his performance..

i agree to an extent.. he deserves respect for being a huge inspiration on modern-day lyricist.. but he definitely deserves respect to be lost after that defining moment.. not sure where the freestyle thing is coming from.. i kinda agree.. someone doesnt have to be a dope freestyler.. but you should at least be kinda decent.. hell, if you write enough you should have a ton words that rhyme in your vocab, which will kill most of the difficulty.. muthafuckas are too lenient nowadays..

As far as listening to music after the 90’s, that’s a lie.. I’ve listened to every era of rap since I was pretty much born.. The first rappers I ever heard was De La Soul waaay back in the day.. then eventually icp and thousands of others of course.. now I have a much versatile range of music on my playlists, including a lot of rappers from today’s music, yes I said TODAYS MUSIC I’m not ashamed. Rap isn’t what it used to be and everybody knows that but if I was a new artist I would want somebody to give me a chance. People act like it’s a terrible thing to listen to newer music. I didn’t realize that as a human being I’m supposed to STOP listening to other music at a certain point lol..
anyways went a little off subject but, regardless of your opinion I still til this day see canibus as one of the illest mc’s EVER! He proved that on “Poet Laurete II” (in my personal opinion) as well as SEVERAL others. Besides Nas being one of the illest poets, canibus would literally paint a portrait lyrically and if you listened to his lyrics with your eyes closed you could actually visualize some of sick stuff he was talkin bout. But yeah, just because I say “One of the illest to bless the pen”, trust me there’s a lot more rappers out there in my library, but we would be here all day long if I listed all of them hahaha.

Canibus didn’t go anywhere. That battle was in 2012. After that he has released a solo album, a collaboration album, a group album and a group EP. Just check wiki or discogs. His last bigger album was released in 2015. That’s not that long ago.
Regarding the battle itself, it only showed us that he is not a good freestyler (plus he was obviously either ill prepared or he blanked). He took a loss there and what he did afterwards was a bit weird and embarassing. But this is being blown way out of proportion. He tried something different and he failed miserably, but that shouldn’t affect what his main craft is. And that is carefully crafting rhymes and then recording them. Nothing wrong with that.

Better said than what I said. Canibus is a fucking master. Poet Laureate II is so dope. Plus “Channel Zero”.. he is a brave motherfucker to rap about that kind of shit. He deserves respect for that alone.
And Warlock, Diz suckerpunched another rapper I can’t remember his name. I’ll find it and post it in a second.

Totally. I think there is some other shit that one could critisize about canibus. Like, sometimes he doesn’t pick good beats, and often he seems to only care about the lyrics instead of actually making a good song all around. But that battle was just a short period of time where canibus wasn’t at his best. Where he fucked up. It should have been relatively insignificant, but obviously that’s not how the internet works.
He’s still a dope rapper to me, there was some good shit on Time flys..
And yeah, PL II is great, that whole album is amazing. I wish Stoupe would have produced more for him. Also includes my favorite Canibus song, No Return. That song is just so creative to me. Really unique.

far as this ‘nicest mc of them all’ thing goes… anybody can have their own opinion on who belongs at the tippy top, obviously.
but canibus name clearly deserves to be kicked around in that conversation. id say hes a hell of a lot nicer than, say, tupac, who might make top five in the global survey. almost certainly top ten.
cmon, hes got quotables in the source, n shit. not that thats the greatest indicator or anything, but i dont remember them givin any to lil jon.
guy can rap. impressively.

cmon, his main craft is being a rapper, apparently arguably one of the best.. that battle really proved otherwise even tho he did seem super under-prepared.. again, it was a written battle not a freestyle.. this is a standout moment, especially for people like me who didnt grow up listening to canibus and mainly looked him up due to this being a huge battle in the scene at the time.. this was like mayweather vs mcgregor and mayweather lost, haha.. while standing without guarding and receiving haymakers every round..
