City Owned Property Removal Policies

So, lets say that there is a city owns a several pieces of public art. It doesn't matter what the art is at this point, it's just pieces of art around town. People on the city council find out that they can make money by removing the art and selling it to someone else or recycling the material the art is made out of. New revenue, no new taxes. They put it up for a vote and the vote comes back with 80% of the cities population saying to have the statues renamed.

Should the cultural value of the art out weigh the rights of the owners (the city who voted)?

Discussion? I believe you would need an injunction to stop an entity from selling their own property. On what grounds could an injunction be issued? A lot of this would depend on the municipalities bylaws which vary wildly. Cultural value is subjective, property rights generally are not.

Fwiw i agree with you. I'm just curious what the counter argument to it is.

I am not sure what the counter argument would be. Owner is allowed to do what ever they want with what they own. Only repercussions may be from voters. Now if the art was licensed to the city or under special contract terms instead of given or sold to them, then the terms of the license/contract agreement would come into play.

That is my take. Just note that I am not a lawyer so I may be completely incorrect.

Counters may come from historical societies. If they can prevent demolitions of historic buildings and trees, they might also be involved in preserving your "pieces of art" which conveniently morphed into "statues" by the end of your first paragraph. Can't wait for the left to cannibalize itself some more when they realize Martin Luther King Jr. was a homophobe by today's leftist standards, and they try tearing down his statues.

Statues are dumb as fuck, shit take em all down. MLK, Washington, Superman, Bernie Sanders, Seinfeld, Guest, Gandalf, Lucille Ball, Terrence McKenna... whomever. Fuck a Phish statue. This leftist gives no shit about any statue or the morally bankrupt MLK that you asssume every liberal must hold dear, for that matter. Property rights are another thing. The owner of the statue is the one to make the decision. Taking down other peoples statues is a fools errand and kind of rude.

Did I say statue? I ment, uh.. "public artwork".

I don't assume anyone should hold anything dear. If (when?) proclaimed leftists try to pull down King's statues it should be a grand display of true multiculturalism on all sides, as well as a dark carnival for the ages. Taking odds on an otherkin getting crushed by King's granite torso falling on them and their family suing EVERYBODY. Safety first, u crazy kids.

Well if they don't want people tearing it down they should put up a warning sign. It seems pretty negligent to omit any safety advisories regarding tearing the statue down. If someone does end up getting hurt, they deserve compensation.

Some signs are useful, like this type by the prison farm I used to live next to in rural Texas:

Instead of more signs, though, maybe we should just bubble wrap the loonies & hope for the best? Beats this possible future:

And now, back to the original topic, life imitating art or something.

First off, fuck statues. Who gives a shit about them? Tear 'em all down.

Secondly, it's not thst the statues are of people who supported racism, it's that they are of generals who SECEDED FROM THE COUNTRY. You think there are statues of Kim Il-Sung in Seoul? I fucking doubt it. You think there ever WILL be, even with a reunified Korea? Fuck no! You think they'll keep the HUGE statues that are in Pyongyang in the event of reunification? I guess it's possible if the North has the power, but otherwise I doubt it. It doesn't make sense to have statues of enemy leaders in your country.

Thirdly, Robert E. Lee himself said that the idea of statues were dumb and that they kept the wounds of war open. And boy was he fucking right.

So in conclusion, fuck Confederate statues, flags, battle flags, and anything like that. If you're gonna have them, keep 'em in a historical park or something

I could be wrong but nearly all public art is sculptural aka a statue

The "left" actually recognizes that historical context is important when looking at or understanding art.

If someone owned an mlk statue and wanted to take it down, it would be their prerogative. His homophobia doesn't lessen his work against your cousins.

It's not even about the content. They were public works of art that the owners decided to remove. Content doesn't matter.

If it was a statue of Obama and the city wanted it down, then who are we to argue? If it was a fucking giant spoon

Or buttplug

Content is irrelevant. If it's city owned and they decide to remove it, what's the argument to keep it?

Lmao! Nearly all is sculpture? What about architecture, painting, stained glass, ceramics, mosaics, tapestries, earth-works, assemblage, installations and performance art? Chopped liver?
