I looked really quick at one of them this morning. Maybe i missed the concept of it. 

Its basically just anonymous posting to a message board within a related topic? Or creating a new subtopic?

Is there a search function that i missed or do you have to scroll thru everything to find the subtopic you want?

Many chans have an board index or catalog page that list *most* of the boards on that chan. Some boards are intentionally not in the catalog and can only be found if you know the /name/ . The un-cataloged ones generally have an unspoken rule of not mentioning the /name/ outside of the board itself. Some chans have a search, most don’t. Various boards will have threads (or breads) and posting within a thread is generally meant to be anonymous -most “oldfags” discourage “namefagging” (the use of the name field when posting). Threads have a post limit that varies between boards and the thread locks after the limit is hit and a new thread is generally created (bread is baked) . Navigation may seem difficult at first but after a while you’ll get the hang of it.

The chans are not for the easily offended. If offense is detected, it is usually met with a 10 fold increase in whatever a poster deemed offensive even if the ones attacking the offended agree with the person who found something offensive. No one likes a “moralfag”, especially on /b/. 

If you are going to post, try to stay away from /pol/ for a bit (lurk “moar”) till you get a feel for what goes on and how anons post. The austists and sperglords are quite adept at spotting “newfags” and will attack mercilessly.  If you consider yourself more aligned with the “left” politically, then you will probably get more out of /leftypol/.

Anons are all “-fags” … planefags, scifags, concernfags, tripfags, etc. It is not a reference to any sexual orientation or persuasion. It is more along the lines that we are, individually, just a small twig… but together, form a giant faggot that fuels the fire. [fag·got /ˈfaɡət/ (noun) : a bundle of sticks or twigs bound together as fuel].

The chans can be fun, been doing them for almost a decade. @lucem-ferre has a good grasp of what it is about in terms of anti-censorship. The idea is use your internal filter and scroll through the trolls, shills, slides, porn, gore, racism, etc. It’s all there. The worst and the best of what the internet is all smashed together.

The hoopla is it’s the least censored part of the public internet and people there are people that value that lack of censorship for various reasons. Media gets it wrong by calling them white supremacist sites and what not, but they definitely are places where despicable people tend to thrive because despicable people are typically censored. It’s an absolute grey area of we don’t want our freedom of thought to be taken how ever you can absolutely trace violent and disgusting real world behavior to these sites and the dishonest propaganda that’s spread there. 

 

It’s hard to tell who actually cares about free speech and who’s just exploiting that narrative to foster the existence of racism and bigotry. Despite that, I do think it is kind of important to not let the internet become overly policed in spite of the spread of horrible ideologies through misinformation and lies on the internet. Despite what majority of the Republican base and the Trump campaign tells you, we are far from that point though.

But there are also “tame” boards around too. /co/(Comics), /g/(Technology), /tv/(Television), /tg/(Games), /sci/(Math/Science), /his/(History), /ck/(Food), /x/(Paranormal), etc… (Too many to list).

The “worst” (or best – depends on how you define it) can be found on /b/ and /pol/
