Ever listened to a song that you hated all around, where you thought everything about this is wrong: the flow, the concept, that awful beat? Only for another rapper to jump on and kill it. And to your surprise he even makes you bop along to the beat you thought sucked ass?

Here are some examples for me, what are yours?

· Ice Cube & Scarface on the Chris Benoit remix. I never liked the original and thought the remix beat was an improvement, but still meh. But the moment Ice Cube started rapping my whole conception of it changed.

· Danny Brown on the video version of When I'm Clownin'. To be fair, I like the song even without Danny, but it was more like a pretty decent song for ICP at the time, rather than a great song. But holy shit, when Danny jumped on, it felt like he was trying to teach them how to treat this beat right.

· Shaggy on Kickin' Kickin'. Hated that song when first listening to the album and couldn't wait for it to be over, completely lackluster performance by J on top of a boring-ass beat. But then Shaggy took me by complete surprise when he murdered his verse like he had never done before, flow-wise.

· Cold 187um on Swan Sighting. OK, maybe this doesn't completely fit the category I defined myself, but whatever. Blaze's song Damn Bitch may be my least favorite one of his. And that's because it had so much potential, because it was a Blaze and Dayton Family collab, whose styles could have meshed perfectly because they both do that dark twist on gangster rap. But then they gave us a run-of-the-mill club "banger" with a terrible hook that still manages to get stuck in your head somehow and completely contaminates the beat. I disliked a lot of the beats on Gang Rags, but this one I hated with a passion. So when I saw the tracklist for Cold 187um's album, and saw that he chose this beat, I was mildly annoyed that I had to hear it again. But he totally schooled me (and Blaze, quite frankly). The song comes on, I'm instantly annoyed at those stupid horns and hearing DAaaAmmN BiIiITtChh in my head, and then get whiplash because my mood turns 180° the second Hutch starts spitting that hook. This is part of the reason why I never understood the hate for The Only Solution, because I didn't think anybody could save that fucking beat.

Some more mainstream examples:

· Juicy J on Feel It. Honestly I think it's just not my type of genre, but I hate the instrumental and the chorus, but when Juicy comes on, it suddenly makes sense to me.

· Danny Brown (again) on Submission. Again, it's probably not a bad song, just doesn't resonate with me. But Danny did the same thing to this beat he did to When I'm Clownin'.

Great topic... I agree that Damn Bitch is a huge disappointment cus I love Dayton Family and really enjoy Blaze as well.

I like both Chris Benoit versions and it's very surreal to hear Ice Cube on there. Next to Snoop, ODB, Slash, Jack White.. for some reason Ice Cube just feels "bigger" to have on there. And on a sideshow type remix EP, nonetheless!

Agreed about Danny Brown on When I'm Clownin, he freaked that one.

This one goes without saying much:

Also, while Esham does great and Lavel does okay, I can't say enough of how J embodies this song.

Everyone does great on here but Zack De La Rocha embodies the vibe in my opinion the best. Just a great track overall.

That J verse wasn't really on my radar, pretty dope, I totally see what you mean.

I love that song. I wouldn't have included it myself because, while the clowns can't touch Paris, I always really enjoyed their verses on this as well. Especially J did great. Shaggy was kinda shakey (no pun intended) at times and not totally on point, like I thought J was, but I've grown to like his verse as well, eventhough he remains the weakest link.

I've always wanted to know more details about how this song came to be. It's ICP ft. Paris however it feels much more like Paris ft. ICP, but I kinda doubt Paris asked ICP to be on his song and then gave it to them to release. But it still feels like it because he has 2 verses, plus he does the hook, and it sounds like he produced it as well. Either that or the actual producer was making a Paris-type beat.
The structure of the song is also peculiar because you have 2 ICP verses first (J, then Shaggy) followed by 2 Paris verses, instead of intermixing them or having each rapper spitting just 1 verse. If Paris fans who can't stand ICP would just cut out the first 2 minutes of the song, they still end up with a 3 minute Paris song, which is pretty decent length wise. Almost seems intentional, like, let's get them outta the way first and I'll give you a killer bonus verse for having suffered through theirs. Or maybe I'm just being cynical.

I believe Paris did an interview with Replicon Radio once and they talked a little bit about the song. But if my memory serves correctly, he was basically just like "they wanted to do a song together and I was like 'why not'".
Maybe he just really hated the song ICP had prepared for him to jump on and he was like "yeah we can work together but artistically I need to be in charge of this thing". Who knows.
