For those of you who don’t know, I have been an avid gamer since I was in elementary school and have played everything from Dungeons & Dragons to Pokemon and everything in-between. Since my childhood I have been directly involved in the creation of several games including the Pendulum Roleplaying Game (which you can still find online), Morton’s List and Quest for Shangri-La all of which I am very proud of and consider to be a part of my life’s work. To me there is no greater joy on this planet than gaming and creating games and that is why it has been my immense privilege and joy to have been able to spend the last several months creating this card game for our Juggalo family.

Before I get into what the card game is I wanted to give props to my friend Louis Simpson who I met while doing EMS and is a now a close friend of mine, because it was his idea of doing this card game in the first place. Together we have put our collective 50+ years of gaming experience to the test (along with valued insight from our nerdy crew) to devise the dopest game we could conceive. I also want to thank the motherfuckin’ Don Mega of all artists to ever grace the planet who has more than enthusiastically joined us as the 3rd member of our creative team…. none other than Tom Wood!!! His artwork, which is featured to the right (and is the box cover), speaks for itself! He is working his magic daily to bring everything to life with straight up master pieces of art that have been flipping our wigs into the stratosphere on spiraling trails of twinkling stardust and flame! When I tell you we have the best team to make this the dopest game ever…I do not boast.

OK, so what is it and how do you play? Into the Echoside is what has become commonly known in the gaming industry as a deck building game. Over the past four years or so these games have become very popular in the gaming world and are extremely fun and addictive to play. In a nutshell, everyone who is playing starts off with a small deck of cards that provide various resources. Then through the course of the game, players will obtain more and more powerful cards to add to their deck making it stronger so they can achieve the highest level of power necessary to win the game. Into the Echoside is a Juggalo version of a deck building game where players delve into the deepest levels of the Nethervoid, gain allies from some of the most notable characters in the Juggalo universe and fight creatures of infinite evil to aid them in their quest to halt the evil that threatens to consume the mortal realm!

Into the Echoside features game play and a theme that is unique to any other deck building game. It includes everything you need to play including a game board, 12-sided die, rulebook and over 220 cards that pay homage to everything Juggalos love. There are 6 different types of cards in the game (Dark Carnival, Psychopathic, Underground, Item, Fiend and Epic) each one representing a person, character, song or thing from the Juggalo world. There are such cards as Juggalos, Moon Glorious, Vera Lee, Mr. White Suit, The Riddle Box, Rude Boy, DJ Clay, Psychopathic Rydas, Whitney Peyton, Kottonmouth Kings, Boondox, Jamie Madrox, Black Eyed Children, Murder Cloak, Chuck the Chainsaw, Cartoon Nightmares, Mr. Rotten Treats and Boogie Man just to name a very very few! Players will have the opportunity to wield the powers bestowed upon them by some of their favorite artists and characters!

Each game takes less than an hour to play, is meant for 2-4 players of ages 13 and up and will retail for around $40-$45. The game will be released at the Gathering of the Juggalos this year making it available for the first time on July 20, 2016. There will also be a promo pack of 3 cards (Wizard of the Hood, Hatchetman and Inner City Posse) that you can only obtain if you purchase the game during its presale (details to come at a later date) or if you purchase the game at the Gathering itself! If you want to check out the developing website dedicated to the game you can check it out here http://www.intotheechoside.com

In closing I want to add that we have been playtesting this game for a while now and I can say with extreme confidence that I am very happy with the play of the game. It is so engaging that whenever I do play test it, I quickly forget about everything else and am just trying to formulate my strategies so I can win. I am so proud of this game and it has been so rewarding to be able to be a part of a such a talented team who are creating something so uniquely entertaining for our family. This has been one of my most personally rewarding projects I have ever worked on at Psychopathic Records.

Also for those attending the Gathering this year, we will have a demonstration tent set up for those who wish to playtest Into the Echoside and learn firsthand how to play. Tournaments for the game will also be included in the Dark Carnival Games Con (DCG CON) that will be taking place toward the later part of this year to find out who will be the best of the best. This is a good time indeed for Juggalo gamers but even if you don’t consider yourself a gamer, give this one a try when you have the chance. You may just be surprised at how addictive this game can be. So until the Gathering the only question that remains is….

Do you dare delve into the deepest levels of the Nethervoid?

1) I am TOTALLY stoked to get on board with a new Dark Carnival Game from the jump (steady as it were :P). Years ago I made the mistake of underestimating the quality of the previous games for various reasons, but not again...

2) ONE of those reasons may have been some of the artwork. Not that it was terrible but sitting on a gaming store shelf next to the D&D manuals... even for underground gaming collectors, other shit jumped out first (something something, the cover of a book, yadda yadda). But if TOM WOOD is gonna be doing the primary art...?! I'm gonna get the damn things just to see his impressions of shit like Moon Glorious! Hell, look what he did with just the fuckin' Missing Link (Lost) mask! Crescent Fresh expectations!

3) Depending on location and dates, I plan to check out this damn Con! I'd have to plan a budget around BOTH the Gathering AND the Convention in order to make sure I didn't spend my wad at the Gathering on all the crazy shit we're gonna get to snatch up (a usb audiobook of Violent J reading "Behind The Paint"... Shut up and take my money!

...that was the positive.... here's the other shit:

4) "Deck Building" games are historically won and lost on a "He/She who has the most money wins" structure. IOW, if I can afford to buy more booster packs than you, I have more chances to get cards that will make it all but impossible for you to win unless you are equally willing to invest. There ARE card games that are based in sets and any additional boosters just add options to everyone in the game (such as those where all players draw from a single deck rather than individual collections) but those usually belong to a certain sub-sect of these kinds of games that involve player pieces and laying down "room cards" to establish a playing field.

Most gamers are fully aware of the slimy quality shit like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon have inherent in them, preying on the addictive/intermittent reinforcement psychology of minds that need that dopamine drop of winning a card game played with glass beads... I don't know if Juggalos would be able to look past the slow burn of that "pay to win" realization (???).

It's encouraging that Jumpsteady mentions that the game has a base set.

5) On a deep geek level question: Has the game been playtested to "breaking" it?; or has there been found or are there measures to prevent game breaking combinations of cards (ie Artifacts in MTG)

6) Am I gonna just want to collect the set of cool playing card pictures and be done or will there be enough printings and follow-ups to worry about buying more after that? Which leads to...

7) If I end up buying the base Gathering set and getting a crap load of cards, years later when I want to show a friend the game, will I be able to play with what *I bought years before or only ever with others who ALSO bought into the game?

Meh....

That's just my initial feel on the thing. I don't know how it plays or the order OF it. Just throwing shit out there.

But I'm still gonna buy the shit outta the thing at that merch booth!

I'm not that big of a fan of games, whether it's cards, board, or video, but I'm really looking forward to this. More so for the art, because Tom Wood is dope.

I was randomly searching and this showed up http://www.hatchetgear.com/boa.....shangri-la I've searched a bunch of times and this has never popped up before. It's out of stock, but maybe this is for shadowing a re-release?

Holy shit! I hope it is foreshadowing a re-release. I'll definitely pick up 2 copies. One for me and one for my collection haha. I slacked on buying it during its original release. My homie has one so I at least have gotten to play it a few times. Its pretty damn fun and funny. I got a good kick out of the tom dub card in the game.

I really hope they re-release Quest for Shangri-la, I'd love to finally check it out.

Tom Wood is amazingly talented. I'll pick this up solely for the artwork but may be inclined to give actual game play a shot. I'm curious to see where this DCG CON is going to be held.

Reign it in there, homie. I think yer taking a long walk off a pier that ain't been built yet. Jump just mentioned a FEW of the cards. Who's to say? I mean, shit, look at Mortal Kombat DLC. Did they just bust out with the Predator/Leatherface/Jason bundle or did they spread that shit out?

Which I am all for as long as they follow through with some kinda longevity. FUCK gaming stores! Sell to the Juggalos and let the retail shit catch up with a dope game that they gotta catch up to...

How fucking FRESH would it be for this game to keep going so that ninjas getting turned into a card becomes a "thing" with winning an award for some shit at a Gathering event? Ninja Olympics? Miss Juggalette? Some tarot shit thrown in...?

I think it's bullshit that Whitney Peyton only gets one card, she should get at least two and ideally more like 3 or 4.

I almost hate how much I love Dark Carnival Games. Whenever I hype Quest for Shangri-La to people it just doesn't get over because I'm a Juggalo so I'm only sayin the shit because I have to. Sucks, man. Quest For Shangri-La really is a great boardgame. There are better (Pandemic if you're into boardgames btw. You need quite a few people to get a solid game going but if you can get it, it's one of the best games ever) games but even as a foundation to build a custom game on, it's near perfect.

Never got into deck builders but Jumpsteady has proven he can write a solid game so if anyone can get me into em, it'd be him. Also, Tom Wood is amazing. The artwork for this has me just as excited as the game itself.

Side note, if Quest gets a relaunch, I'm hoping it comes with some expansions. My friends and I have added our own cards/house rules/characters/locations/events/etc over the years but it'd be cool to see who/what all would get added in (ABK for sure. I mean, there's a fucking tomahawk in the game but no ABK) and who/what would get left out (Boobcocks the bareshow probably).

I thin you're mixing up two different things. Collectible card games are like magic where you buy packs and hope to get good cards and play against others who also buy packs. You each organize the cards you bought and hope yours are better.

Deck building games are a single set. All players sit down and the deck is built from the established main deck. You can play with two or more players and only ever buy one pack.

If you get your friend into it in a few years, he only has to buy a copy of the game if he intends to play without you. If he buys the game, you'd play with one or the other, not both.

The game play is like magic but the deck building part is closer to monopoly.

As for expansion packs go, if they make them they won't be randomized with some cards being more valuable than others. They'll be like buying a new set of designer chess pieces to play on your classic chess board.

I was gonna come say exactly what Rob said. Play Marvel Legendary if you want an idea of what adeck building game is like.

They opened a Café/Bar in omaha called Spielbound that has hundereds, maybe thousands of board games available to play. It's like $5 for a day pass. Pretty cool in my opinion. I wonder if they will carry this game.

Sounds neat....but what happened to the albums from ABK, Big Hoodoo, Vanilla Ice, etc?  I would of thought those would be pushed more or at least release dates given that are cemented in time, or even a sampler, but a card game?  Very cool artwork and cool idea, but give the artists a push and get their stuff out there....ugh
