Hey everyone- first post here.I read this thread a couple days ago before I joined, and I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Sad songs, especially in hip-hop or country or other story-telling genres, come in two types, at least to my thinking. There are songs that are sad stories, and songs about just being sad.
As far as saddest stories, I’d say “Vera Lee” which is in my head lately.
And for just feeling sad, I think I’ll go with “Nothing’s Left” “Crossing Thy Bridge” “Behind the Paint” and “Take It!’ from FF vol.3. Take It! isn’t a sad sounding song, but thinking of watching your homie get carried away to hell is kind of rough, and knowing that the decision isn’t up to you on where he goes–not sad in its execution but it comes from a sad concept.
when I first saw you say Take It was a sad song i chuckled, but truth is, if the beat were different and J sung it in a different context with the same lyrics, it could easily pass for a sad song. Would be cool if he acousticated it.

Thanks for the benefit of the doubt. Like I say, not a tearjerker but you can find the sadness in there. I’d be interested in a slowed down, more overtly sad presentation of that one.

Thinking about it, the clowns rarely make “the sad song”. Frequently they have a few categories on most albums..
Wicked Songs (aka spooky, horrorcore in theme)
Sex Songs
Funny Songs
Hype Songs
usually the tracks contain all of those elements. Very rarely do they dip into political or social commentary, like Terrible or News at Six o Clock. Then they began a type of Happyfriendly Song style around Shangri La, for better or worse.
Twiztid has The Sad Song at least twice in every album.
Afraid of Me.. Darkness
Blink… Renditions of Reality
Broken Wings…. I’m Alright
and so on… plus “The Weed Song”
Smoke Break.. Another Smoke Break
Bagz
Hydro
So High
My Favorite
and so on
