It wasn’t always God.. from this MEC interview: https://web.archive.org/web/20031206004057/http://www.realjuggalos.com/kzoo/blue/Interviews/mec3.php
“I just heard “Homies” and “Thy Bridge” thats it….I’m not im going to front. It sounds like something my parents would have liked. It sounds like it could be Zug Izland or some Violent J solo stuff. There is more singing and guitar. .I’m not crazy about all that singin & shit on ICP records. It sounds religious.”
So between 2001 when mike left and 2002 they adapted the carnival is God thing.. remember it was ment to be the dark carnival?

I remember getting off a night shift and rushing home to sit on their website, refreshing the main page over and over for hours because they were releasing/leaking the first “single” from the Wraith, that day (when they used to say they’d do something and actually do it).
Sat for hours man. I got so bored. Then it was there. Crossing Thy Bridge. Took me about 15 mins to download and I was fucking pissed. I can’t even tell you how whack I thought that song was. Terrible choice for a first single/teaser.
I quite like that song in the context of the album but back then I couldn’t beleive what I was hearing. If I wasn’t so deep into it, at that point, I would have been fully out.

One of my favorite songs by them, ever. Anything where they question God and/or the people that claim to serve him, as in “Hellaleujah”, is gold to me. However, I musically don’t dig “Where’s God?”, despite approving it’s intention.
Anyways, I also have memories of those two singles. Downloading them when I still lived at my dad’s house, sitting by the computer. I love the song, but I also felt a sort of system shock upon hearing it. It was a completely different vibe than just about anything they’d released.

What else could it have been? Its like a Dan Brown book. His writing is so good by the time you get to the end you are actually half convinced there IS some secret knowledge that you aren’t privy to. You get your expectations way too high, then you are let down when it doesnt meet them.
I’m an atheist myself, but I still remember getting goosebumps the first time I heard the unveiling. That was the first card I was around when it dropped so there’s probably some bias there.

It’s just the way it was handled was bad, they’ve obviously had a running theme that the joker cards judge you when you die and send you to either heaven or hell but straight out saying the carnival is God when it was always billed as the place where you go to be judged? And I don’t want to get into the “dark” carnival aspect again, it was much cooler when it was wicked.
I wonder if J had never smoked weed would we have gotten the dark carnival 6th

Wraith Shangri La era was as cringe as the album itself. It followed The Jeckel Bros era which in my opinion is when they were the most interesting, bizarre and hilarious. I fucking love the album so much. The intro, the skits, every song. Shaggy yelling at the beginning of terrible. I stab people?! Forget about it.

Awesome interview. Fucking realjuggalos, holy shit. Thanks for posting that. Maaan imagine that first lotus with mike e on it as well. Tales with Marz is a classic but still. Mike E creates atmosphere and energy.

I feel like by the time Great Milenko came out, ICP knew where they were taking the 6th. Like Pass me by as a example. It’s just the manner of approach may have been different if Mike E Clark did it.
I loved the Wraith. It’s my 3rd favorite album of theirs. I prefer it as it was.
Also does anyone remember that reverse message on Echo side? It seemed like they were foreshadowing something.

It’s obvious they’ve always been religious, but they’ve always had that dark aspect to being judged for the afterlife.. I get shangri la was the positive happy place for those who earned it but that’s not what we came to see! The end of time was ment to consume us all, people thought the world was ending with the 6th!

Despite conflicting interviews on the subject, what I’ve come to realize is that the guys are simply spiritual and try their best to believe that there is something to being a good person. Trying your best. Religion isn’t exactly the goal. The liner notes in Shangri-La tell it best. I loved reading those.
I am an Agnostic Atheist. Basically no one knows the truth, and may never. I won’t go into it, but I also try and be the best I can be to everyone I can. Just be decent, people.
