I wasn't sure where to post this between here or the Underground/Horrorcore since BattleAxe Records is back in action but I saw a lot of Swollen/Madchild posts here so I figured fuckkit.

Slaine: I really like his style of rappin and every track I heard him on wish Swollen or Mad has been tight. My fav is on grenade launcher "fuck a bitch raw dawg and wash my dick in the sink" My wife will still say "eww" out loud when she hears that lol

But...I really wasn't feeling his lyrics or flow in his verse. His voice sounded a little Eminem-ish too. He usually sounds better when he raps faster. Doesn't have to be speed rappin but this verse did him no justice. Starts off dark with his lyrics and makes you feel like its gonna be a bloody adventure but it ends up being another Hollywood pg-13 horror movie with B list celebs. He ties his rhymes together nice though throughout proving his skill with alliteration, assonance, and consonance. It just doesn't paint the picture

Madchild: Of course you hear his trademark whiny like voice and it begins. He paints more of a vivid picture with his tales of decapitation and ripping open chests. The line "Wack off on your bashed in face till I ejaculate",  that's the next one for me to have my wife hear and go "eww" all the time. His darkness is a side of him I haven't heard since "Balance" Say what you want but dude is constantly putting in work. Since he got off the drugs and then stopped rapping about getting off the drugs, Madchild has really worked hard to make some great contributions to underground rap/hip-hop.

Rite Hook: The hook was decent and his voice was too. Catchy enough to carry the song between verses. Definitely not one I will be singing in my head all day but was decent enough to keep the dome bobbin.

Overall: 3.5 out of 5. Slaine should of went 2nd on this one. Mad paints the picture better and if Slaine went after him it would of been a better setup in the song. Slaine probably went first since he is the movie that this song is on the soundtrack of.  I am sure they will have some new songs and really showcase their skills together. Hopefully they have the chemistry that they have in their respective groups.

On a side note: I'm by far a bigger fan of Swollen vs Madchild solo. Prevail IMO has always been the better rapper of the two. He always has amazing lyrics and references. But Madchild is no slouch and they compliment each other so well.  They have been going strong since the early  90s. Plus since Rob the Viking has been their main DJ they seem to have some tight beats. I'm happy to see Mads solo stuff is really catching on and that he and Slaine are coming out with stuff but Swollen needs to be the priority. Its like Maynard with A Perfect Circle...Don't forget about TooL. Anyways hope you all got something out of this.

I thougt Rite Hook killed the chorus on this song. Saw him live with Slaine a few months ago here in town in front of a crowd of about 60 people. It was dope, he was a great hypeman for Slaine, here are a few photos from that night-

I feel the same dude, love Madchild but Swollen is where it's at. In interviews Madchild seems pretty adamant that he is gonna focus on his solo career for a few years, so I'm not expecting a new Swollen album for a while.

@miklo-velka Awesome pics. I'll have to check out more of Rite Hooks music. I was happy though swollen put out what they did after losing Battleaxe. They were on a roll putting out stuff so I have plenty of songs to hear. I got to see them for the 1st time in NYC last year and hope they tour in the area again. Gathering would be nice but would like to see them in a small club again. Glad to see some Swollen fans out here.

I noticed you didn't mention Armed to the Teeth.  I don't know about your opinion on the album but it was a different feel and personally I'm not a big fan. Warrior is a catchy anthem and Bollywood Chick is good but it seemed like the guys rapping with them were not the usually style of guest rappers they collab with. Seems like Mad and Prevail kinda mailed that one in. Still though they put out some strong albums since as you mentioned.

Armed is sub par Swollen, even they know it. Madchild said in an interview that he considers Armed to the Teeth and Heavy as the two "curve balls"  they have thrown at fans.I felt they were going for a more mainstream sound with those ones fo sho.

Also Madchild admitted he was still struggling with addiction when they put out Armed, even though publicly he was stating he was clean and sober.

I saw the tour they did for Armed, it was fuckin weird seeing that dude Tre Nyce on stage with Swollen the whole time, singing choruses and doing the odd verse. They featured him heavy in the videos for that album too. They may have added him to the group if the album blew up, thankfully it flopped.laugh

For the record my two top Swollen Member albums are still Balance and Bad Dreams cool

I got into Swollen about 5 years ago. A friend of mine told me about them and sent me a CD...it was Heavy.  I thought it was pretty decent though. I liked having moka in all the tracks. It definitely made me want to listen to more from them. Obviously after going through all the albums its more of a back burner but still have some songs that pop in my head. Ambush from that album is my fav.

I though Tre Nyce just got in the way. I didn't even like his name lol it was totally different from Moka, Dilated, Buc, or Son Doobie etc..I wonder what Tre Nyce is doing nowadays

Black Magic is up there for me with Balance and Bad Dreams.  I was waiting for Daggermouth to come out hoping it wasn't going to be worse than  Armed. I thought Black Magic would be their last great album. I'm glad I thought wrong

I like some of the tracks on that album too.

Swollen hated  it, to the point of deleting it off their official discography on their own website lol.

I have to say though it currently stands as my least favorite Swollen album. I'd put the barely distributed Monsters 2 ahead of it even.

Agree on both those pointslaugh

He disappeared pretty quick after that album, haven't heard a peep from him since

I actually looked him up on youtube and I found some stuff from him. Had that mainstream rap feel to it. Talkin bout smokin kush and partyin and all that stuff. Not knockin it or anything but definitely more of a style that worked better for him and with other rappers with that same appeal. I personally don't get into it but hey least dude is doin his thing. Im just happy he isn't still rappin with Swollen =) I liked guys like Slaine, Ill Bill, Vinnie Paz on BDM. Thats the one thing I thought Daggermouth lacked. They didn't have any guest rappers on there...well except for Bring Me Down which I LOVE.

Hey glad the kid is still doin his thing

He must have come cheaper than Moka.I'm guessing that's why Swollen and/or Subnoize hired Tre to sing the hooks for that album

It's true, Swollen gets some of the best features. Ill Bill and Vinnie Paz are my shit. They used to come to Toronto like twice a year.

Heavy Metal Kings did a coast to coast tour up here about 2 years ago, and it flopped. They haven't been back since.

See thats one of my fav things about Heavy. Moka was on the whole album and I like his rap style and his vocals on the hooks. Definitely talented. Even the actual lyrics are subliminally clever. He is always saying their names and the name of the group. Its a good way to get people to remember you and give your songs/group an identity.

Question for you Miklo-Velka...Is Rob the Viking the main DJ for Swollen and if so when has he become the main stay. Im curious because I love his beats and sound effects in the song and I feel like the past few albums and even Mads solo stuff had some good beats to them. When I saw them in NYC Rob was there and even in their video. Just wondering if you knew

Basically the answer is yes, Swollen is a 3 man group with Madchild, Prevail and Rob the Viking.

If you see Swollen live, it will be Rob behind the wheels of steel.

He started out as just one of many producers Swollen was working with, and then was officially added as a group member for Monsters in the Closet after it was clear they were working with him more than others over time.

Rob doesn't produce every beat for Madchild/Swollen nowadays, but Mad stated in a recent interview that he always brings Rob in at the end of the album making process to add his "magic" to all the tracks. He said that included additional sound effects and drops, as well as tweaking other people's beats and music if necessary.
