Most U.S. nuclear power plants have passive safety mechanisms that do things like drop the core into the earth to prevent it from going critical. This happens completely without human involvement or even power. Upon the core starting to over heat, it melts the platform holding the core up and the whole thing drops. Once it is in the earth, the neutrons are safely absorbed and the core cools.
The thing you have to worry about is not nuclear, but hydro-electric. Those things need constant monitoring and maintenance to prevent catastrophic failure or dam breaches.
On a side note. I liked the virus (rage virus) idea in “28 days” – while they were not technically zombies (they were not dead), it did play into the zombie genre.

If the History Channel is to be believed (and, hey, why shouldn’t it be?), you’ve only got about 10 motherfucking days after civilization shuts down until the radioactive fuel rods at every nuclear power plant in the world evaporate the water from their cooling pools and start belching out massive clouds of prolonged radioactive mists.
More than half of those power plants have two or more nuclear reactors, bringing the grand total to more than 100 reactors spread across 31 states. And Europe is much, much worse — a similar map of their power plants looks like the crotch of an angry sailor.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has set up emergency planning zones (EPZs) around each nuclear power plant, defining the minimum safe distances in the event of a nuclear meltdown. They vary in size from plant to plant, but consist of two distinct zones: a plume exposure EPZ, with a radius of about 10 miles from the reactor (a distance within which about 6 million Americans live), and an ingestion pathway EPZ, which has a radius of about 50 miles and contains around 120 million Americans. Basically, unless you can make it to the Rockies within two weeks after Mothra destroys the White House, you’re going to be bathed in an explosion of radioactive mist.
But the nuclear plants are just the beginning. What about when a natural gas line explodes …
… and you’ve got one of those running into almost every structure in the modern world.
And then you’ve got the industrial sites: Pipes and holding tanks rust and spring leaks, and with no crews to maintain them, every refinery and factory in the world is one spark or lightning bolt away from becoming a city-consuming ball of fire. And it’s not just the ones dealing with volatile chemicals, either — we’ve already talked about how everything from powdered milk to batteries can suddenly become tiny antipersonnel mines under the right conditions. Even grain silos can turn into a smoking crater at a moment’s notice. The post-apocalypse, in other words, would make you feel like you’d been Inceptioned inside Michael Bay’s most erotic dream.

mad speculative.
the rockies have air currents, too. if it was that much radiation about [enough to make both seaboards unlivable], then we are all fucked anyway.
i dunno where the ten days thing came from, sounds like a chain letter. an american reactor, once scrammed, is very unlikely to have enough residual heat energy to run away.
the fukushima plant did have core melts, and they were largely due to failure to provide power for the cooling measures accounting for residual decay. they had passive systems as well, but for some reason, they werent using them at the moment of failure, and were unable or unwilling to bring them up.
if i had to guess, id say this is why the ‘lights out, reactors melt’ doomsday scenario exists. but plausible though it may be, it aint gonna happen, not universally.
in an apocalyptic scenario, your prime concern is food. not whats goin on way over them hills. hell, you wouldnt know about it anyway. how you gonna get the word on where is safe to go, if comm systems are now limited to horse couriers? [besides, how many of us have radiation badges and geiger counters in with our emergency shit?]
gonna bet your life [and your familys lives] on some infotainment from a defunct cable service?
we should start a ‘what to do when the world ends’ thread. ‘end-of-the-world dos and donts.’
awfully paranoid, arent you?

I don’t know, not sure I believe the History Channel. Going to government websites on the subject, it shows that the power plants have passive shutdown mechanisms that do not require human involvement or even power to work. With multiple redundancies of the systems, it seems unlikely that in the US you would have that problem. Other countries, though, do not all have the same type of systems.
I’ll trust the government over the History Channel cause the government has never lied to us before.

but maybe it is more probable for sasha to go than carol…. carol has such a backstory now, and history. I do feel like she’s waaaaaayy too important to be let go of, whereas sasha just going a little psycho right now because she’s lost so much in such a short time. carol has somehow managed to maintain. that’s what makes her a fan favorite.

I gave up on TWD a while back. The last episode I watched was
the after school special about how Deryl only has a thick, outer shell because he’s protecting the sad, inner layer that has daddy/booze issues
TWD is “realistic” in the sense that the vast majority of people just walk around aimlessly bitching about insignificant bullshit until something of remote interest happens for them to bitch about for a little while, then they get bored of that and go back to bitching about insignificant bullshit again. That is not exciting. That’s stupid everyday shit that entertainment is suppose to take me away from, or at the very least, enlighten me on.

NEGAN kills GLENN. Im not really spoiling it, since its in the comics, plus right now NEGAN is just in the world of rumors being on the show, but they are also saying there will be a chance of a possibly worse villain in the works. But negan kills glenn, rick tries to intervene, but negan tells rick theres about 50 guys surrounding rick.

the show hasn’t accurately followed the comics ..glenn is one of the most liked characters so I’m not sure if they’ll take that chance since it could hurt their ratings. that’s most important thing for a show to have business wise.
kinda like daryl never existed in the comics ..and rick had only one hand in the comics

Im curious if theyll ever cut ricks hand off on the show. Like i could totally see rick getting bit on the hand and having to amputate it himself. Shit would blow up social media like, oh no ricks bit!

they said in an interview that rick won’t lose a hand ..they said digitally erasing it from every scene with rick would be too difficult. they also said they have the script for the show written all the way up to season 11
not sure if carl’s face will be half gone or not
either way rick, carl, and daryl won’t die
