There’s always been a level of self gratitude in poor communities and just within the past few years have I started questioning it. It’s one thing to embrace the hand you’ve been dealt but it’s something completely different to shun those that want to improve their spot, which is something I see a lot of.

If someone wants to get a better job and have nicer things there’s absolutely a push against that from others in the same poor spots. Not on a jealous level but on a “too good for us” level. Not saying that’s what’s wrong with shitty areas but I do think mentality and the feeling that doing better equates to “selling out” is a huge problem.

Embracing the hand you’ve been dealt and being complacent with your position in life are two completely different things.  I’ve tried to tell kids that they should be proud of where they’ve come from, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t strive to better their lives.
