Sorry I'm a little behind on things...I wanna go through and test out all of the effects you explained before I comment more. I have used reverb before, I like how you can make things sound like they are in different sized/shaped rooms....pretty cool. Also I now understand what people mean by too dry or too wet...never quite understood that until now lol...in the mean time anyone wanna take the time to listen to another instrumental and critique it a bit?

not bad.

kinda simple, to the point.  despite what some producers will tell you, sometimes less really is more.

its thumpy, which is no trouble, since there isnt a bassline to interfere with it.  may add problems during mixdown/master, though.

could use a little variation to keep from droning.  again, vocal arrangements will make either that an issue, or make it go away, depending.  myself, i usually do the beat drops or other shit like that after the lyrics are written, to know where itll work best.  have the beat ride the verse, so to speak, instead of the other way around.

on the whole, i like it more than the other one.

didnt listen to it through headphones, but something in there seems noisy.  i think its a noisy instrument, but if its coming from a sample, or its unintentional, you may want to think about eqing it out, or replacing the instrument.  if its deliberate, no thing.

if it were me, id feel that a song like this should be clean.  but thats my style talking.

uh, this may come off patronizing, but 'noisy' means random waveforms, like static.  the major hook in the first track, that instrument is noisy.  no reason it couldnt be on purpose, but by accident, its problematic.

[edit:  shits kinda catchy.]

I definitely agree that keeping it simple sometimes can be good, often I dislike too much clutter and the inability to properly place complex composition. As for the thumpyness, I'm not sure if I myself like it. I intended to tone down the kicks and at some point add a bassline but nothing turned out as planned? I feel that I try to plan things out too far ahead of time when structuring the beat, hence the beat drops, etc. I usually just assume that I will write something to it later and it will magically fit perfectly. I would say that the noisiness is either unintentional due to my inability to eq or intentional as I was trying to layer classical sounds with some more 'electric' sounds. So I guess partially deliberate.

ive only done around 5 or 6 beats that actually ended up sounding exactly the way i wanted from the start.  most of the time, im working from one small idea, adding shit to it or taking it away as i go.  the problem with that is, you can easily hit a dead end.

if you havent yet, listen to each channel, and the whole mix, through some good headphones.  thatll help you decide if it needs eq adjustment or retooling.  if you dont have a pair, get some, pronto.  for the producer, good headphones are absolutely essential.

I liked the Gun song better than the other, but I think that's simply just pure taste. They are both pretty good though. Just maybe a bit more EQ on the mix. (or that's what I would do) It's all just one big learning process and once you think you have it down and solidified you find out something new that makes everything you do sound 10X better than before.

Writing songs to beats with drops already in them, it's just how well you are at planning it all out when you write.

That's what industrial/EBM usually is, wicked sounding electronic music. Suicide Commando, Agonoize, Combichrist, Wumpscut, Grendel, etc.
